Ahh, the old legal chestnut of contractual obligations.
In that case, maybe there ought to be a clause in the broadcast contracts in future, that if our Home Nations teams fail to
qualify for major international football events such as this (same goes for the World Cup) both the BBC and ITV should be
allowed to relegate the event to being shown on BBC Three and ITV4 respectively. That way, the schedules on the main
channels don't have to be rearranged to make way for a sports event we didn't even qualify for!
There could of course be an exception for the final match of the tournament.

Then the broadcaster would have to pay more, the tournament sponsors expect the platform.

You realise it is not the BBC who have the upper hand here
don't you? And stop trying to arrange your posts in little neat
columns. It's very unusual and annoying.
Like you, somebody will say.

Yes but Euro 2008 is an UEFA event which the home nations are part of hence regardless of who qualifies is why is should be shown on BBC1 and ITV1. The same goes for the World Cup because the Home Nations are part of FIFA and if someone doesn't like football take the Rugby World Cup if none of the home nations qualified for it (would all have to not get in the Top 3 of their respective groups to have to qualify for the next one) I'd still have it on ITV1.

And since none of Home Nations teams qualified for the tournament, it makes no sense for it to be wasting airtime on
the flagship channels BBC One and ITV1. The live coverage ought to be shown on BBC Three and ITV4 respectively,
Much like the African Cup of Nations (which goes out on BBC Three) Euro 2008 is essentially a foreign event.

Hmm, although the ITV trailer actually makes no sense. It's message seems to be that if you're feeling deflated
by the absence of the home nations in the competition, you'll feel better because Euro 2008 is on ?
Makes no sense.

Let me guess. You must be English.
Just because England didn't qualify doesn't mean that this still isn't a top quality event that deserves top exposure by our main channels. When Northern Ireland, Wales or Scotland don't qualify but England do, the rest of us are subjected to the English media going ballistic about how they're gonna win this, or gonna win that.
So what if there are no home nations? Big deal. Watching games on BBC1/ITV1 involving fantastic teams like Italy, France or Spain is most definitely not "wasting airtime" as you put it.

African Cup of Nations.
Given that the Home Nations are absent from the competition, perhaps a fair compromise could have been shunting the group stages to BBC3/ITV4 and just airing the knockout rounds on terrestrial.

But as said, UEFA have the upper hand in the bidding process.
I just cant take Jake Humphrey serious as a sports presenter.

Same here. Where is Manish, has he left BBC Sport or something? He, along with Adrian Chiles, had been the most refreshing changes to BC football coverage in a long time, and I don't understand why on earth Jake Humphrey seems to be preferred now.

Why they cant just use Ray Stubbs during the tournament for Focus, I don't know.
The setting for the BBC Sport studio is very similar to the 2006 World Cup one, perhaps not quite as nice though.
