Of the six 3pm kick-offs, three would have been covered by Sky and three by the BBC.

I thought it was Sky who produced them all and provide the commentry for themselves and international viewers.

The cameraman most likely moved to the opposite end of the pitch at half time to cover the same side attacking that he was in the first - was he at the end that Birmingham's goal was in the first half by any chance?

Generally on a PL game, its 25-30 cams, most with an operator, 7-8 without.

Birmingham didn't score, but yes it was at the end United scored, although I wasn't paying too much attention at Half time, whilst watching Match Of The Day 2 I did see that the camera was back behind the goalpost, so the cameraman must have just gone for a break at HT.

I didn't realise there's usually 25-30, I could see about 7 or 8 at least, and I was quite near the front too. (Without bragging Cool )

Things may have changed a little since 2007, but this helps explain:

And yes, by BBC and Sky it really means the companies they contract to do their OBs, although you'd never know from the big trucks with Sky Sports HD branding on the side!

so would the BBC have done tonight's midweek matches from the Premier League for example which weren't shown live in the UK?

As they don't have any rights ti these games, I doubt it.

Well, they do have rights to them and there'll be shown on Match of the Day tonight. However I assume Sky would have filmed last night's matches as the Beeb won't be showing them in any great depth. More than likely they'll be filming at least one game tonight, though.

Surely they have the rights to every Premiership game, midweek or otherwise. It's just whether they have time in the schedule to use those rights

I assume they have rights to all the goals (after some point), but I know they're only allowed to do a a proper highlights programme when a certain amount of games are being played.

There were a couple of instances last season where Match of The Day 2 only broadcast one game - I presume it's different for midweek because MOTD2 can just repackage the goals of the previous days MOTD?

For the price they pay for them the rights to Premiership highlights are fairly restrictive really and haven't really moved with the times. It's pretty ridiculous that the BBC will be able to put MOTD2 on the iPlayer, but not MOTD itself, when it's new contract begins next year.

Back to ESPN and do they have any kind of highlights rights. I know Setanta had the midnight goals show on Saturday and Sunday, which I assumed included all Premier League goals (possibly except for live Sky games).

The Beeb have the rights for highlights every Saturday and Sunday, regardless of how many matches were played on that day, and they can do a midweek show if there's been six or more fixtures played over the course of the week , which is why there's highlights tonight because there are six games this week in total. They're also able to do an MOTD if there's a significant fixture on its own, such as two seasons ago when they did one when Chelsea vs Man U was the only midweek fixture (which turned out to be meaningless). There doesn't have to be six matches to show either, back in 2004/05 there were five matches scheduled on the Tuesday and five on the Wednesday, and they showed MOTD on the Tuesday as one of the matches was Arsenal vs Man U. And sometimes if all the fixtures are dull, they won't bother.

However as a Premier League broadcasting partner they have the rights to show the goals of all matches, hence why they can show the goals from Monday matches in Inside Sport, without having to do a "Courtesy of ESPN" caption or anything.

I'm guessing the highlights rights for ESPN will be identical to Setanta and they'll probably show the weekend's goals before their matches on Sunday or Monday. Setanta could show the goals from the live Sky games and Sky show the goals from ESPN games - although on Goals on Sunday they don't run them with commentary like the others, just with a voice-over.
