I was recently on holiday in Cyprus and they had notices in the villa saying as of earlier this year (March I believe) they were no longer able to receive BBC1/2/ITV/Channel 4 because "Sky had ceased broadcasting them abroad".

Instead we had Nilesat and their equivalent of Freeview if you opted for that.

That was a bad (and wrong) excuse from whoever put the notice up!

It's common though. We stayed in an apartment on Tenerifé 10 years ago, just after
the BBC had moved from widebeam Astra 2A to narrowbeam 2D. There was a note
in the handbook blaming Sky for removing BBC services on the islands.

Anyway, doesn't matter, Sky are very good at basking in reflected glory, derived from similar misconceptions.

Indeed. Their solution in the handbook was to use the FilmOn app (to watch an illegal stream)...

When I was in Spain last month I saw at least one bar with the football on its screens with FilmOn's DOG

I suspect it's getting desparate with people turning to alternative technologies just to watch the likes of bbc one, I'll find out soon enough when I go on holiday to sunny Greece.

It's long been a misconception that satellite tv = "Sky"
