I know there is a thread already set up for EastEnders but feel this should be discussed in a seperate thread as it is aimed at discussing what is next for EastEnders and if the soap is now beyond help.
Following news of Kat Moon's departure along with Tina Stewart, Alfie Moon, Chrissie Watts, Sam Hunter and more recently Zoe Slater - is EastEnders going down the road? They are starting to loose BIG characters and the storylines are similiar to past ones...there is no feeling of fresh storylines, no doubt there's bound to be yet another affair or murder coming up!
Sure, you can bring back characters like Sharon, Dennis, Little Mo, Peggy, Phil and Grant but at what cost? What if viewers get fed up with these characters? All that will happen is that Peggy will have get another pathetic excuse of a 'showdown' in the Vic and Phil + Grant will fall in love with a couple of birds in the Square, knock them about and ditch them...wow! Its so obvious that either Phil or Grant will fall in love with Sharon and have an affair. Another love triangle? Oh yes, of course, so not EastEnders!
There have also been 3 executive producers in 3 years! Rivals like Corrie and Emmerdale are just roping in the ratings because they have different storylines coming in all the time and continuingly bring in new faces. EastEnders rarely brings in new faces now, just old ones. How long will it be until we see Kathy or Michelle waltzing around Walford?
EE is introducing 3 new characters later on in the year but we need more! Younger cast members! Characters that are unique and stick out like Corrie's Sean. Do something with the set - its getting boring! Stop axing characters, make use of what you have, though there are a few characters that could be given the chop.
Personally, I feel EastEnders is heading down a dangerous road. They really need to turn it around quickly or it just won't be worth saving. If EE carries on like it is just now then the ratings will go soon from 7 million, already considered as shocking ratings, down to 3 or even 2 million!
I think the best thing for EastEnders would be to go off air for a couple of months, overhaul the cast -bring in loads of new faces, tidy up the set and invest some dramatic fresh storylines.
I wish it all the best and hope it recovers!
