Over here we've always had next day counts for our general elections and it doesn't make the election programmes any less dramatic - though us having PR-STV means that most of the "action" doesn't happen until afternoon. We also have tallies, which you don't have (or need) which give early indication of the results.
The one time we did have overnight counts was in the three consitiuencies that had electronic voting in the last election, which had basically instantanous counts (called sudden death by one prominent opposition TD who lost her seat...)

Indeed, the drama comes from the gradual release of results and the creep through hung parliament, towards the famous 'post'.
What would be interesting, from a reporting viewpoint, is when - with electronic voting in years to come - we get to a point when all election results are released at the same time.
To relay and digest over 600 seats all at once, highlighting important ones, and explaining the nuances of the election result, would be a far greater challenge than in the current conditions.

At the last general election count I sat on a dining room chair in a freezing cold Hiace van in a leisure centre car park waiting to bounce a signal into Broadcasting House in Belfast off another Hiace van parked on top of a nearby hill (I bet you thought directing an OB would be glamourous).
It took the count centre staff over 9 hours to count roughly the same number of votes that the tellers in Sunderland South managed to do in about half an hour. No recount was involved. No one could tell me why, though believe me, I did ask. Northern Ireland Civil Service efficiency I assume.
If there is a way to improve the process, I'm all for it.
How about we make it like Eurovision... except much, much longer, with 650-odd results to declare. Terry could commentate. We'd need a bloody big scoreboard though.
