According to the Daily Mail, Sky Sports, ESPN and Channel 4 are in the frame for the two packages which were owned by Setanta. ESPN are reported to be the favourites but it'd be great if Channel 4 won the packages. However I can't see it happening myself.

How on earth could C4 justify that - unless they launched a pay-TV sports channel? They're pleading poverty all the time at the moment...

Exactly. Indeed I don't think any terrestrial channel could justify the risk at the moment, even If they got them at much less than Setanta paid. Live Premier League football is very much untested on terrestrial TV.

Really terrestrial broadcasters are better off holding out for Setanta to go bust and then raiding the cheaper rights, which although the rewards might not be as high, the risks would be much lower. Things like Golden League Athletics, and from next year, the Guinness Premiership Rugby, could easily find a home on terrestrial TV.

A statement has been issued saying Setanta in America, Canada, Africa and Australia is unaffected as they are separate organisations, but what about Ireland. Is that separate from the UK operation?

It is and it isn't...

The holding company is Irish-registered Setanta Sport Holdings Limited which owns 80% of the Irish operating company Setanta Sports Channel Ireland Limited who operate Setanta Ireland and the Irish versions of Setanta 1 & 2.

However the Irish Setanta 1 & 2 are mostly the same as the UK versions and like the UK versions are premium services. Setanta Ireland is the main Irish-oriented service and is premium on Sky but basic on cable/MMDS. However even it shows a chunk of the same programming as the UK service, shows for example like Football Matters, the Friday Football Show all come from Setanta UK and coverage of the Premier League, SPL, and Scottish and Welsh Magners League games all come from Setanta UK. Setanta Ireland's idents are mostly the same as the UK though there are a few Irish themed ones in the same style now.

Complicating matters even further is that while all of Setanta Ireland is available only in the Republic, some of Setanta Ireland is available in Great Britain, and more of Setanta Ireland is available in Northern Ireland - some of Setanta's rights are "ROI only" and some are "Ireland only" (ie including NI).

Seperating Setanta Ireland from Setanta UK is therefore, more complicated than simply selling the Irish operation - they are more interlinked than you might imagine and Setanta Ireland is dependant on Setanta UK (for example, it being summer at the moment, they are showing hours of Setanta Sports News).

UFC contract ended six months early. Bravo and ESPN interested in the rights...

It will be interesting to see what happens now with the England and FA Cup rights. I can see Sky picking up Setanta's FA Cup matches but it's the perfect opportunity to ensure all England games are FTA. Will it happen? I doubt it.

Setanta goes into administration

The Irish broadcaster Setanta Sports has gone into administration after failing to make a number of payments to sporting organisations.

The administrator Deloitte said that it would shortly cease broadcasting to customers in Great Britain but would continue to operate elsewhere.

They said they would immediately stop collecting subscription payments.

Two hundred employees involved with the British operations have been made redundant.

It's as normal... no mention of the news so far...

. . . and they're airing promos for live events this weekend.

I wonder what Deloitte means when it says broadcasting will cease 'shortly'? Days, weeks?
