Russian oligarch rescues Setanta with £20m deal

Setanta Sports was tonight rescued by a Russian-born billionaire, in a last-minute deal that will save English and Scottish football from having to plug a half-billion-pound black hole.

Len Blavatnik, one of the oligarchs behind Russian oil company TNK-BP, is to inject £20 million and take control of Setanta — which, with other injections of cash will ensure the company can survive.

Although his fortune fell from $11 billion to $4 billion according to Forbes magazine, his remaining wealth still has enough money to launch a rescue of the loss-making Dublin-based broadcaster of Premier League football, which has on the verge of collapse all this week.

Big Brother on lookout for Setanta rescue

Endemol, the television production company behind Big Brother, is in talks to join a rescue deal designed to avert the collapse of Setanta, the struggling sports broadcaster.

If Setanta wants to keep the ball rolling, it needs new funds Endemol is among a group of new investors which are looking at injecting about £40m in exchange for a controlling stake in Setanta, which has run into trouble after failing to retain two packages of rights to show live Premier League football from the season after next.

That's all very well, but any numpty could call themselves anything they want and claim whatever they want.

Although a large proportion of their programmes come from London now, although not from Setanta-owned facilities. The same is true of their playout
