The episode in question (S1 E6, TX 20/5/79) wasn't actually wiped. When LWT brought in the D2 storage system in the early 1990s all of the 14 episodes had a D2 made, along with a viewing VHS. However the D2 for S1 E6 later 'went missing' leaving the VHS copy as the only archive one of that episode.

I've a feeling it would have been the original broadcast master copy - if so then it probably may have been junked when the transfer took place.

Would there not been sold on for scrap? Im sure I remember Carlton used to do that with master copies of some programmes to make money?
