I see that the BBC are still broadcasting subtitles on 888. Do we know if these are staying?
They are staying for the benefit of European Redistributors and viewers. Teletext is still commonly used for subtitles in Europe.
Never mind subtitles, Teletext is still commonly used for Teletext in parts of Europe ! and will continue to do so in the RoI after tonight.
The UK have opted not to carry '1974 spec 'analogue' teletext' on digital platforms (apart from P888). However DVB formats can, and do, carry the service in other territories.
My TV actually won't go in to Teletext when watching a BBC channel on DSat now. It reports 'No text available'. I'm guessing that it is not seeing an index page(s) and decides that there is no teletext at all (despite page 888 broadcasting away). The way around this to turn my Sky box to a channel with teletext, press the text button, go back to a BBC channel and then go to page 888. I then see the teletext subtitles.
I can't be the only one with a TV that does this (it is a 2011 Sony) so the BBC may have to start broadcasting an index page of some sort again if the subtitles on page 888 are to be available to everyone. I wouldn't expect it to say anything more than 'type 888 for subtitles', unless they can make 888 the main index page so it comes up as soon as you press the text button. I don't know if that is possible or not.

Yep - the UK is an 'odd-one-out' in ditching WST (aka World Systems Teletext) - other broadcasters across Europe continue to use it on DSat, DTT and DCab.

Doesn't your Sky box decode the subtitles internally? You can usually activate them from the HELP button.

Yes, it does. I wasn't reporting this as an issue for me, but an issue in general. If the BBC are still broadcasting subtitles on 888 (and carry on doing so after today) then they obviously deem them necessary. Perhaps for people who aren't watching via a Sky box or people watching on the redistribution systems that WillPS speaks of a few posts ago. If they are necessary, but not available to everyone then presumably the BBC will do something to make them available to everyone.

I know if I connect my Sky box via Scart or RF I can get the 888 subtitles up - just not through AV or DVI/HDMI.
