Broadcast v On Demand (January 2018)

So a few months ago C4 premiered the first episode of the fairly heavily promoted End of the F***ing World with the rest of the series then available on All4 and going pretty much unnoticed.

This month the series was then released worldwide, including the UK, and it's fair to say it's now been noticed with pretty much universal critical acclaim.

Can't help but think that C4 have messed up their strategy for this one and ended up gifting Netflix the credit. Whilst All4 is one of the better UK on demand services for a new series to breakthrough broadcast channels are still unrivalled and can't help but think C4 would have got far more credit for this had it aired on E4 or C4 in the way Derry Girls has quickly become a breakout hit for them this month, with C4 acting quick to secure a second series.

You said it was heavily trailed, but (having just watched and loved the series in question) I saw no trails of it or promotion at all, I have no idea it was a Channel 4 show (apart from thier logo at the start of the episodes). Whereas on Netflix there were trailers, adverts, lots and it was all over my social feeds before it went "live" on the site. Thats how I heard about, and watched it..

I think the first mention of it was during the credits of Celebrity Hunted, but I don't really remember much mention of it afterwards on the '4' channels... however the trailer was shown many times on The Box Plus Network, but that's probably more to do with few trailers being played, usually the only trails are for 4Music shows, The Box Plus App, The 'Fast Track' and either a Channel 4 or E4 promotion and those are shared across seven channels, so it was probably promoted more on Box Plus than Channel 4.

I remember seeing quite a few ads for it at the time, and was also featured in one of the All4 box set promotions (along with other series about "misfits"). I think I watch the first episode on Channel 4 then watched the rest on All4, but didn't realise the rest of the series wasn't being shown on TV.

Yes, they seemed to promote it alot around Sept/Oct so it then seemed odd that only the first episode aired on linear TV - first time I think they've done that with an original scripted show.

(P.S. Glad the situation in Hawaii was cleared up before this thread got moved to the Newsroom! Very Happy)

They were definitely plugging it because it encouraged me to watch it on All 4, and I was very glad I did. But this is why I'm not a fan of pushing on demand content over linear, especially the terrestrial networks whose content you'd expect to find in the schedules and not on the internet. It seems to get less of an audience because either nobody knows it's there, or they can't be bothered loading up the iPlayer and looking for it.

Agree - the broadcasters on demand platforms are very much about building on their links to the network and their strength is in catch up or premiering the next episode, or an entire series after the first ep, but the series continuing on the broadcast network. I suspect End of the F***ing World would have got more viewers via All4 had it also been broadcasting in full on E4 (very much feels like an E4 show) at the time.

It was trailed during every single "ad break" on all4 in december, alongside a very loud Jack Wills advert.

It came up as a 99% match for me, which probably means I'm a psychopath.
Mr Kite, Rex and Brekkie gave kudos

Fantastic show, so in one sense I'm happy to see it do well, but if they lose all the credit then they really have dropped the ball on this one.

Do we know if it's coming back?
