Emmerdale Thread

The NEW one! (December 2008)

I noticed the last Emmerdale thread has been archived, so I thought I'd start another one for comments after tonight's episode.

Personally I thought the Jasmine & Shane storyline had been rather weak over many weeks; but to include tonight's episode as a pivotal point in the plot was quite good.

Debbie's & Jasmine's roles seemed far fetched, but the off-screen 'implied' violence sounds were well handled, I thought.

However, on freeze-frame, Jaz's 'chair leg' (or whatever it was supposed to be) was suspiciously like a piece of grey foam pipe insulation. No wonder it didn't get much time on screen Laughing

What does everyone else think of this plot on Emmerdale? Is it a step too far, or just gratuitous sensationalism in time for a Christmas episode?

I thought tonights episode was really good but I think the aftermath will be a lot better than the storyline has been up until now.

In other news its been reported that Sheila Mercier (Annie Sugden) and Karl Davies (Robert Sugden) are to return for Jack's funeral in February.

Surely Annie Sugden has been killed off off-screen by now - I thought they had the funeral years ago (in Spain of course!).

I think it's better that they do it sooner rather than later, after considering the feelings of the family, of course. I always felt they left it rather too long with the 'Seth' character being mentioned long after Stan Richards had died, surely that was a constant reminder if his family were viewing.

It's nice if they do a tribute episode, I believe he was the longest serving actor on the show, although not the only one to play Jack Sugden. It will be nice to see Karl Davies back; I think I only remember seeing him in one drama since he left Emmerdale (World War I drama?), so I assume he's been doing theatre.

He plays one of the main characters in popular ITV1 drama Kingdom

No. Annie is still alive and well in Spain. I think her husband Amos has been killed off in Spain tho. And of course Annie will have outlived all 3 of her children.

Yes there was another actor playing Jack from the first episode, Clive took over the role in 1980. I think he was the longest serving actor in the show after Stan Richards died.

Isn't Jack supposedly staying with an 'ill' Annie in Spain? I suppose that is rather cruelly ironic since the actress Shiela Mercier is alive and looked very healthy for her age in some of the 'behind the scenes' 35th anniversary programmes.

Everytime Jack went to Spain it was to look after an "ill" Annie, but I think this time he went just to generally see how she was.

Great that Sheila Mercier is returning after a long absence, just a shame it's not for happier times.

I agree its great to see an original cast member returning to Emmerdale after a 12 year absense. Annie wouldnt know many of the people in the village now tho - she'd know Alan and Eric (and i assume Andy, Diane, Victoria, Daz have visited her in Spain at various times).

Also im sure its been mentioned the likes of Edna have been living in the village for years and years, just not seen on screen until about 10 years ago.

Apparently Betty has been in the village for years despite only being seen on screen since 1994. She remembered Mr Wilks and Amos in one scene not so long ago I seem to remember. Confused

A very dramatic Emmerdale tonight that will probably leave the residents 'reeling' for weeks to come

I hadn't read the spoilers so I didn't know what was going to happen or whether Matthew King lives or dies (I've since flicked through the Christmas Radio Times to find out)
