I can't imagine it being a planned change - certainly not at the filming stage anyway, since in all other respects it appeared to the same old multi-camera soap opera style. And not-particularly-special-second-episode-on-a-Thursday would be an odd time to do it.

I wonder if a late edit was required, and it was either wrongly encoded or played out from somewhere unusual.

I've seen episodes of Hollyoaks (by accident, you understand) go out with one or two scenes un filmised, possibly for similar reasons.

Emmerdale is currently being shown Hollyoaks-style with a filmic/25p effect. Is this a mistake or a planned change? Oddly it suits the show.

It's happened before on Emmerdale, in fact it's mentioned on the first page of this thread.

I remember that occasion - the difference this time was that the whole episode had the effect - it wasn't intermittent.

They did, back in 2003, switch to a dodgy film effect for Marlons Wedding/the 30th birthday. It was quickly dropped.

It looked awful. Let's hope it was a one off mistake.

Wonder if ITV Playout have been trying out file delivery of programmes recently? Codec / server port issue perhaps?!

Some editing can be done with server systems where it plays out as it's edited - so maybe you're right!
