People will always want to watch Storylines like this (Like Dennis getting killed..) Emmerdale will go back to becoming the third best soap soon anuff
I think Emmerdale has already established itself as on a par with the main two (Corrie & EastEnders). Apart from spectacular (and expensive) episodes such as Emmerdale's on Thursday, there is very little difference in the ratings these days.
Long gone are the days when any soap could regularly attract 15 million, as both Corrie & EastEnders did before digital channels appeared. I don't think reducing the number of episodes will neccesarily help - because the audience share is just not there to capture. The entire target audience is so fragmented it's very difficult to get more than about 8 million for any programme (apart from on-offs like the World Cup with 20+ million).
I have always said Soaps will not be around come 2012 (Atleast not Primetime) but i think it may be sooner then that now
I think you are wrong with that assumption. Soaps are cheap to produce after the initial set-up costs - far cheaper than costume drama, documentaries and comedies.
What makes you think that the TV companies are going to kill the only "golden goose" they have left? Are you suggesting the only TV we will have by 2012 is ITV Play or Sky Vegas 24/7????

Reminded me of Crossroads, they used to do this after the credits. I used to like it when Brookside when they showed snippets of the next episode during the end credits.
