Emergency Broadcasts

Do TV companies still have backup emergency broadcasts for their TV programmes? (November 2013)

The BBC and ITV used to broadcast messages, etc, in the event of a national emergency; especially during the Cold War.

This left me wondering something: do TV companies have backup messages for an event such as nuclear disasters, national disasters, etc?

So I've taken this question to TV Forum for all of you wondeful people to answer. All answers are much appreciated!

Thanks, everyone! Very Happy

Surely you want answers, won't more questions confuse you?

Presumably such messages are secret if there are any.

Yes, such things do exist I believe but procedures are known to only a very few people who have to keep schtum. I've heard of cases where freelancers in some control rooms have had to leave the room when certain things have been rehearsed.

However, one tape to be used in times of emergency has leaked out....

I'm sure they'd be giving out safety information, news and videos like Protect and Survive...

Yes, although Protect and Survive comes from a different age, when there was effectively one type of threat. It would be difficult to have an equivalent PIF today as the nature of the emergency could be anything

There was this thing that would have been used in the event of a flu pandemic being serious enough to be considered a national emergency

I don't know what would happen if a nuclear bombing occurred right now; TV companies in the UK seem to not have planned or prepared for such emergencies.

There are emergency procedures and bunker studios/information centres in place, but they are top secret.

How on earth can you know that... They don't "seem" to have rehearsed for royal deaths, doesn't mean they don't though.

Well the BBC certainly didn't "seem" to have rehearsed the Queen Mother's death... Wink
