BBC claimed a ratings victory for last nights election coverage gaining 41% of the total viewing compared to just 17% for ITV. BBC viewers peaked at 5.8m, ITV peaked at 3.7m.

Sky pulled in 290,000 viewers whilst amazingly News24 pulled in 200,000 viewers, considering the coverage was the same as that on BBC1. The ITN News Channel peaked at 60,000 viewers.

ITV claimed a victorious night declaring it was the fastest results service. Of 573 seats, ITV beat the BBC to 502 of those with the BBC coming first on just 71.

08/06/01 BBC News win TV Election battle
The TV Election battle was won by BBC News it has been revealed. BBC had 5.4million viewers compared to ITV, which scooped 2.8million viewers. Sky News, with its amazing interactive service, managed to peak at 144,000 viewers. BBC News 24 peaked at 75,000 and the ITN News Channel was watched by 20,000 viewers.
