I think someone's head might roll...

BBC2 have just shown an episode of Eggheads with a question about Alexander McQueen - although I believe there was an apology by Dean Lydiate at the end (didn't catch what was said).

Don't they usually review programmes before they are put to air? I think 24 hours is enough notice to pull an episode!

Yawn. Such a non-event. Who really cares? I doubt a little-watched afternoon quiz registers on the radar of the fashion world (in fact nothing in the real world registers on the radar of the fashion world), unless Judith Keppel is modelling for Givenchy.

That wasn't really the point of the post though, although personally I don't feel any apology or 'change to the billed episode' was needed - on iPlayer you can see it's just a perfectly straight question with nothing remotely inappropriate said.

I've just watched this back on iPlayer, and I can't see any malice or insensitivity in asking this question. Somebody's been reading too many Daily Mails.

Have not seen the episode but if as the poster says it was a straight question and answer then I can see no reason whatsoever that the episode should have been pulled or even an apology necessary.

Yes too many Daily Mail's! Expect them to have it as front page news tomorrow

Realistically if we're going to keep editing things because the subject matter is deemed either inappropriate, bad taste or whatever, it's a dangerous slope to start out on because eventually there'll be nothing TO show. Next thing you know we can't show Morecambe and Wise on the telly anymore in case their widows get upset.

Don't they usually review programmes before they are put to air?

Only a tech-review sometimes weeks beforehand, and then a check of the beginning and end. But you can't expect everything to be watched all the way to check content. The paperwork for a programme would mention people featured or any potentially contentious subjects... but in a quiz like Eggheads they're not going to list every question.

It is if someone flags up the problem and it's worth pulling the programme for

Also, you can't edit a question like that out and it would put the show out of sequence if they took that episode out.

If it's just a straightforward question about him, then I don't see what's "insensitive" about it. If, on the other hand, they were taking the p*** out of him then I can see where there would be an issue.

Does anyone know what the announcement was? By the sound of it all it warranted would be a "that was recorded before the recent death of Alexander McQueen" sort-of-thing, rather than an apology.
