Can anyone please tell me if there is any free software to download with which you can edit sound files, i.e. cut bits off?

Thanks,

I use a piece of Software called WaveStudio, it allows you to record directly from files, the internet etc, and then edit them by selecting part of the sound, displayed in a graph format, and it is very easy to use, you can also add echo effects to it.
However, I am not sure whether the software is commerically available, have a look at download.com or google.com for 'Wave Studio'

You may well have the old version but I recently bought a new set of Creative speakers and the updated version is quite good.
It is free, but my point was, it is perfect good at editing sound files, indeed the American sound files I have put on the site have ll been edited with it.
I am just off to download CEP so I will let you know what I think of it.
