I would love to know whats the deal with Kathy.

Well that's the idea - that's only the beginning of it and it's already confirmed she's returning full time. Suspect the hastily rewritten "truth" about her "death" will feature tomorrow.

According to that blog post earlier, it seems to be well thought out rather than hastily rewritten.

I suppose if a character doesn't die on screen bringing them back from the dead is easier

Do you think any of the other cast members, apart from Steve McFadden (Phil Mitchell ) and maybe Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale), knew about Gillian Taylforth (Kathy Beale) returning? The fact that scene was filmed away from Eastenders set may have been to keep it secret from the rest of the cast. It would be nice to think the cast had a surprise too!

The theory is that Phil paid Kathy off to stay away, and the money which appeared in Phil's hands several months ago was money that Kathy had sent back.

I'm not sure the live part of the scene was filmed off-set.

Having watched a full weeks worth of episodes for the first time in years this "live week" has admittedly been done really well. It's insane nonsense but done with such swaggering, rejuvenated, confidence it's hard not smile and just go along with it. As an outsider looking in on soap fandom; there seems to be a growing consensus that Eastenders has made inroads into recovery this past year while Corrie has taken a bit of a slump. From what I've seen of Eastenders this week it does seem healthier than it has done for many years and the better of the two at the minute.

Pretty certain the live sequence with Kathy wasn't filmed at Elstree. Don't think they would have done the Canary Wharf stuff as a live composite on a moving camera at night and in the rain.

It also allowed them to keep Gillian Taylforth well away from all the paps at Elstree. Really clever solution - and you just needed Steve McFadden not to be needed in live scenes at Elstree for it to work.

Confidence is absolutely key. And EastEnders has definitely regained its confidence. The audience can detect that. The last few days have been amazing. Old characters and new characters delivering in equal measure. And the live aspect has just given the whole show a little bit of extra tension.

I have just watched the Q&A interview with Dominic Treadwell-Collins, Sharon Batten and Hetti Bywater which went out live on Facebook just after the flash back episode:

https://www.facebook.com/eastenders - look for the live stream post

They reveal that the actor who plays Bobby was only told on Monday that he was to be the killer (his dad was told before) and Hetti Bywater only found out 8 hours before it was shown live.
A lot of the production crew were said to be surprised by the Kathy appearance, but they didn't say if other cast members knew.

My mistake - I could have sworn the #BBLive DOG wasn't over the opening wide shot of the scene.

Hope they keep the night time sequence, far better than the "normal" one.

I wonder if they got the idea from this (better executed) mock:

The shots of the square with Canary Wharf in weren't live (they were composited obviously) - but the scene with Kathy and Phil outside in the rain with Canary Wharf in the background had the #EELive dog.
