There are so many little oddities with the EastEnders titles. I've noticed that for a period in the 90s, only a character's first name was credited except for Dot Cotton whose full name was used.

IIRC in the very early days, nicknames were used in the credits for some characters, e.g. "Wicksy".

The same was the case for James Willmott-Brown. Although that was possibly because the character was known as Willmott-Brown on screen.

Personally I did quite like the titles EastEnders Revealed used to have which used shots of the square with the map logo placed within those shots. However for the main show it wouldn't be worth the backlash - though I am surprised they're yet to place Albert Square within the map so the titles begin there rather than at the Dome.

I did this mock a few years back using some footage/themes from EastEnders Revealed:

I quite liked the 'Ricky and Bianca' special theme that David Lowe composed. http://www.davidlowe.co.uk/uploads/media/audio_140.mp3

Oh so do in fact.

I think it would fit if EastEnders did a Neighbours like opening? Obviously add the "duff duffs" at the beginning of somewhere in the theme?

I wish this had been adopted as the actual theme in the early 00's. It's a bit dated now though.

There's a nice extended version too, with the middle eight:

Ah, very nice! Thanks for sharing.

I guess that's the problem with updating the EastEnders theme tune. As 80s as it sounds now with its drum machine and synths, it's the established theme and any attempt at updating it would probably not last more than a few years.

Whataday, feel like I have saw that before either somewhere through the gallery or on YouTube. I like it.

They should've done something years back which would have made it more natural. Like you said VMPhil bringing something in now would be difficult and people would probably oppose it.

There was another version of the theme used in the short lived 2000 show 'Eastenders Family Album' but I can't find footage anywhere!

I recently bough the Julia Smith and Tony Holland book 'EastEnders: The Inside Story'. It's a fascinating read about how the show was created and all the care and attention that went into creating Walford. The book shows the original memo from Simon May outlining his arrangement of the theme tune and the various different versions they could use.

What we know now as 'Julia's theme' is what he termed the 'Romantic pre-empt'. The book clearly states that the first use of the 'Romantic pre-empt' was episode 66 when Michelle revealed she was pregnant to Den.

To date we've never heard the 'cockney start' with the barrel organ!!

I'm guessing that sounded similar to the section of the full theme around 1:22 here:

Well, that was the first time it was used in full, or in the way it is used today, but the last few seconds were heard on at least three occasions before that. Julia's Theme (and its successors) has evolved from being simply an alternative to the drum-beats to being used almost like incidental/mood music (if that makes any sense).

Does anyone know whether the newspaper headline outside the station (at 10s) was a reference to a particular cast/crew member? The headline was "Local legend Hank to retire?".
