The early uses of Julia's theme used the extract from 00:07 to 00:25 (sometimes just the last few bars) and in the 90s the part from 01:44 to 02:04 was sometimes used. I particularly like that latter segment, and it builds up nicely into a crescendo, though how jarring the cut to the standard theme sounded is debatable.

Once they started editing these parts together, or used the new recording, we no longer hear that part of the tune, but in general the resulting cut to the standard theme sounds better, I think.

Didn't notice at the time but having watched the live episode on iPlayer, you can hear at the end that firework sound effects have been used as the Duff Duff's! Quite clever.

I did mention this a few pages back. Maybe a bit too subtle as few noticed it.

The ending of that is gorgeous. It's a shame they really bottled it after the 1993 revamp and played it safe with the main theme ever since.

There was also "Kathy's Theme", which sounds very Eldorado if you ask me.

There's always been discussion among die-hard fans over whether or not this was specifically Kathy's Theme, or just the version of Julia's Theme composed alongside the 1993 EastEnders theme.

That cut is even worse than how it is normally! I really do like the jazzy 1993 theme though, I can see why they dropped it but it's a gorgeous piece of music.

I find it interesting that they actually changed the "duff duffs" as well http://youtu.be/HeOpciY3qZ4?t=35s

To be fair, that Kathy clip must be a fan-edit as she left way after the 'jazzy' theme was discontinued.

Wiki has a list of all the times they've used different music either before or during the end credits, and says that it is specifically Kathy's theme, as Julia's theme was used twice in 1993, with it not the music in the video above either time. See here.

Then again there are no sources so who knows.

'Kathy's theme' is as was broadcast at the time.

That article is misleading, as Julia's Theme was not used in 1993 (post theme change). There were just a handful of episodes which didn't feature the 'doofs'. Such as this one:

I seem to remember the scene when Ian was being driven off to be declared bankrupt, and he was being driven past his various businesses - had a special sombre version of the music. Couldn't find a clip on YouTube

This is an interesting watch if you've got a spare hour or so... composer Simon May discussing how he got together with Leslie Osborne to write the EastEnders theme amongst many others...

I agree - Kathy's Theme (or whatever it is) doesn't work as a lead-in to the standard theme, which makes me think it was never meant to be used that way.
