I had to laugh at the article in today's Mirror saying that ITV beat EastEnders in the soap war. It's so obivous now that people only stick to Emmerdale as it's an hour long edition and then tune into BBC3 for their fix of Enders.

Emmerdale got just a few thousand more than EastEnders, both were in the 5 million bracket. Emmerdale of course hasn't been above 6 million throughout the World Cup period and on some days scrapped in at just 2 million. They forgot to mention that bit of course.

Just proves that both soaps have fallen by the wayside really.

Ooh look an explosion in Emmerdale.... ZZZ! Rolling Eyes

I have to say the second half off Emmerdale tonight was brillant, ill catch EE another time.

Your right about what you said though, about them getting low ratings during the World Cup, i dont think it was hardly mentioned in the newspapers.

Reasons for this drop are simple

People who were watching Emmerdale, were not going to switch over at 7:30 and miss half of the programme, and many would have waited for the bbc three episode or even taped it.

I can't see this affecting Eastenders

I thought the official BARB ratings included the BBC Three showing?

In any event, this is a catastrophic rating for the flagship show. If it were on any other channel I couldn't see it continuing production.

Years ago though this wouldn't have happened. Eastenders would have held up, it's just not appointment to view any more. Viewers will happily miss it, or watch it another time. With the BBC Three viewings, it still won't get anywhere near it's average rating.

Hardly anything seems to be appointment to view these days. Unless you can create a talking point where people are going to be talking about a show in playgrounds, common rooms or offices, maybe where Big Brother is successful, then it seems you're just not going to have a massive hit. Eastenders used to fill this criteria but doesn't look to be doing so well anymore. You still have your hardcore fans around, but if not enough people want to talk about it then they're obviously not watching.

Reminds me of the "EastEnders - Everyone's talking about it" promos a few years ago.

It certainly isn't appointment to view in our household anymore.
