Did anyone notice that EastEnders earlier was using the up-scrolling credits earlier as opposed to the usual style of changing with every bar of the music? It looks extremly strange, but at least it stops the BBC from plonking their promotions over the credits.

EastEnders change their credits more times than anything else! It's ridicoulas how many times they've changed it this millennium, I just cannot keep up with the credits changing to this 'n' that all the time!

Isn't it just the style they use for the omnibus?

And slightly OT, why is Parkie tonight in 'filmic' style (what is the technical term for that?) as its off-putting. And did we ever get to the bottom of why the show is not yet in widescreen?

Cheers, Asa

No, the omnibus uses big letters in the middle, but they dont scrool, they change every few seconds. These are in the same font & size, but they scroll up the screen. Last time they tried these scrolling credits in 1998 they also superimposed credits over the first couple of scenes. They didnt look very good, and were dropped early last year.

{EDIT: You guys  replied faster so I've had to change this}

The credits last 'rolled' a couple of years ago. I wasnt sure for a minute but james confirmed it.

This stemmed back to the row at the Beeb when they tried to use the actors, executive producer and directors credits only during the weeknight shows, with full scrolling titles on a Sunday with the full cast and the technical staff.

It probably bought them 1 minute worth of extra dialogue:

RICKY EXITS
BIANCA : Ricky!...Ricky!...

It caused a huge furore with the techies union, and rightly so, and full credits per-episode were re-introduced. Why would they re-introduce scrolling titles now?

With reference to Asa's point; Yup, the show seems to have been 'processed' with that effect that makes video look like celluloid. As used, but quickly dropped after compaints, by Casualty. It made Robbie Williams look as amazing as ever. No video effect however will save Lenny Henry, who is currently dying on-screen.

Its a shme EastEnders are doing the full credits to the short, 30 second EastEnders theme. Its a shame the full 2 minute theme hasnt been heard for ages. The last time it was heard was when Kathy went to SA in 1998 and that was a one off. Since around 1993 they were only using a shorted 1 minute mix on all the episodes, then in 1994 the 1 minute theme was only used on omnibuses, and in 1998 the omnibus was shortened to a 45 second mix. Adding salt to the wound BBC1 now only show old repeats with the 1994 titles and music, and the credits only use the 30 second theme.

Has anyone got the 'Kathy Goes To SA' episode in Nicam? If so, plz plz capture the end theme tune in WAV form!! I taped it in mono; didn't get a Nicam video til late 1999! I know the CA talks over the first verse (as they do!) so all I gotta do is slap a clean first verse in (with the help of Wave Editor) and hey presto!! You have a clean 2-minute 1994 EastEnders theme!!

That was one of the best EE episodes! It started as a bizzare dream with Kathy in a prison and Pat as the prison guard didn't it? And the end music was the extended theme tune. I've heard it on the web before - i think it was on one of the tunes websites.

Have you tried telly tunes?

Oh, and to confirm:

1985 - I think 1998, the credits went across the screen in 'frames' with the beat

1998-2000, the credits went up the screen (new Ex Producer Matthew Robinson introduced this)

2000-2001, the credits went across the screen in 'frames' with the beat (Started with new Executive Producer John Yorke's first show)

Yesterday - up the screen

And from mid 2000, the omnibus edition showed the end credits in the same way as the night ones but the names etc were in a larger font and justified to the middle of the screen! From 1998, it had been going up the screen and previously to that, it was in frames!

Oh, they are so complicated those EastEnders aren't they?

I don't recall it starting with the dream! I remember Kathy telling Pat she had this dream, but Im pretty sure the episode didn't feature the dream! Anyway, Im keeping my eye on UK Gold. Today was the first episode of 1997 so we've still got a way to go.

He also axed the credits overlayed over the first couple of scenes. I'm glad, as they looked nasty.
