Going OT for a slight moment, but found this on YT:

a promo for 1988 EastEnders historical war spinoff Civvy Street, featuring a 1940s interpretation
of the theme tune. Jazzy saxophones a full five years before that abysmal 1993 effort.

Here's a little gift for you . . . enjoy!

Going sort of back on topic ... other than the use of Julia's Theme (or similiar) for emotional episode endings, has EastEnders ever had a sombre version of the full theme tune like Neighbours used to use but hardly ever seem to now?

I think the most memorable time Neighbours used their sombre piano theme on the end credit was when Helen Daniels died, with an accompanying montage of still pictures. Simple and effective, and didn't fail to make you feel the loss of a popular character.

A "cheerless Christmas". 1940s, 20Teens - some things never change!

Pat's Theme was a sombre rendition of the EastEnders theme tune, aired at the end of the character's final episode. The screen faded to black.

I am probably going to be shot down for saying this, so I'll say it quietly. (I quite liked the 1993-1994 jazzy version of the EastEnders theme tune) I'll hide now!

Yeah Pat's theme was the same idea as Julia's Theme but it didn't mix into the normal theme (as an alternative to the duff duff drums) but continued with the piano for the whole thing.

A weird bit of dubbing about 14m45s in to today's episode (if anyone cares). Sonia turns around to show her new tattoo to Carol, then, while her face is offscreen, a dubbed voice says "It really hurt." It sounds so unlike Sonia that I thought it was some overlaid audio leading in to the next scene.

There was some dodgy dubbing on Tuesday's episode as well, but at least it was recognisably Phil Mitchell dubbing himself.

Looks like the whole 'temporary set' thing for EE has been scrapped and the new one will be built where the temporary one would have been located

Has there been a set date for when they are going to be filming in the new set?

When the first set of plans were announced. I think work was due to begin in 2016, and all work to be complete by 2018. Don't quote me on that though.

Looking at the new plans, the Argie Bargee and Walford East tube station are set to go, along with George Street. But there will be a new Supermarket, Coffee Shop and London Overground station replacing it beside The Albert.

Looks like the houses where Billy Mitchell lives are for the chop, along with the Bus Stop and Post Office. I wonder where they will move the Bus Stop with the new set. Can't imagine they will not have one.

Then the old site will have space set aside for new sets in EastEnders. I remember hearing talk of a High Street set being added. And no doubt the park and allotments will go there, as well as the police station which will also be missing with the new Albert Square set.

Ah, that makes sense mdtauk - I was a little confused as the new lot is quite a bit smaller than the existing one but I wasn't accounting for the non-contiguous elements that could go anywhere.

It looks like they have removed public access to the files now, but one thing I thought was interesting was that because they are rotating the set by 90 degrees they will have to hide the gable ends of the existing studio buildings - creating a whole new vista which will be interesting to shoehorn in!

I wonder if when this is approved / construction begins that we will have the occasional reference to the Walford Brewery thrown in...
