The additional scene was reported earlier today on Digital Spy.

we know soaps don't reflect real life literally by the fact that Jack Duckworth won on the 1993 grand national Confused

it was a nice touch, guess too much would have look silly as well

don't rmember any of them mentioning Diana's death or the Queen Mum's though

Probably because EastEnders is exported to an international market, and some people might not understand what those events were, yet Michael Jackson is an international superstar known all over the world, so it would make sense to put that in there.

Sorry, are we talking about the same Diana? Up until her death there was a worldwide media frenzy and the queen mum is the queen mum! They're just as famous if not more than Jacko

I think if you are a fan of a British soap opera, then a scene discussing the Queen, the Queen Mum, Diana etc. is hardly going to be that confusing is it?

I would imagine that the scenes would be more confusing because overseas customers would potentially be watching months or years later - and mentioning something that topical will actually date the episode...

As yesterdays episode must have already existed without the reference to Michael Jackson then maybe that original version would be the one offered for international sales. The episode may have already been sold before it was shown in the UK and before Jackson died anyway.

Well going on the basis EastEnders already writes in a whole bunch of topical things that mean nothing in international airings as it is, your argument is kind of flawed.

The concept of "Bank Holiday" as we know it does not realistically exist outside of Britain and Ireland, a "Bank Holiday" in the US is seen as a sign of a financial crisis. Yet it crops up quite regularly in EastEnders despite meaning nothing to anybody else.

Many dates, full years and what not are already part of the writing. Copious calendars, times of day crop up, mostly on mobile phones now, but the show is written for the here and now. Jacko's death being mentioned on a 2018 re-run on PBS of the EastEnders episode originally aired June 26th 2009 will probably cause people to think "oh, I didn't think he'd been dead that long. Hey, this episode is nearly ten years old, what's PBS's email so I can complain?" and then do something else.

Although Brookside contained a scene about Diana's death and impending funeral, which was transmitted on the evening prior to the funeral itself. IIRC it involved two of the characters discussing the event, in the shop at the petrol station.

talking of Brookside they were the only soap to over look the solar eclipse

didn't corry add a scene for a world cup final result once, think it was 98

That was EastEnders in 2002, IIRC.

didn't realise the park in Walford was so close to Albert Square, In tonight's episode, when Denise meets Lucas in the park, for a very brief second (on iplayer at 12:40) you can see the top of the viaduct and part of the R&R sunburst Confused

Was tonights the first episode to air on BBC2?

Quite surprised they didn't just hold it back and then doubled up later in the week.
