Needless to say I reckon she did a sterling job - especially remembering the lines! A fantastic actress.

I don't questioning her abilities as an actress, merely the material used, which for the casual viewer reinforced the concept that EastEnders is a very depressing programme.

As for "remembering the lines" - autocue can be an amazingly helpful reminder!

Autocue is almost never used in drama... June Brown is a highly experienced and well respected stage and screen actor - and has worked in TV drama since the days of as-live (if not live) production. Learning your lines is a craft skill for actors.

You would have to use a freestanding autocue - as actors seldom look to camera (they usually look at each other or somewhere else)

In the days of live and as-live TV drama some actors DID write their lines on bits of set, their cuffs or on props. (Hospital soaps were great - as the doctors could have crib sheets on a patient's notes) William Hartnell did this in Doctor Who - which was as-live.

Its amazing how the lines come into your head when the adrenaline starts pumping!

Very true but sometimes too much adrenaline can have a reverse effect. I remember I had to sing in a production of Phantom of the Opera a few years ago and completely forgot the second verse - so it came out in "hush sne cos de shna stem la..." No idea what I was singing but I don't think anyone noticed! Embarassed Laughing

The fact that EastEnders is on 4 times a week surely means they have space to 'experiment' with off the wall episodes like Dot on her own.

It was excellent, it DID flow with the plot, and EastEnders should be applauded for being brave enough to allow a 30 minute monologue episode.

Some of the younger actors/actresses should ask will they ever be considered good enough and strong enough to carry 30 minutes of prime time TV solo like June Brown.

Brilliant TV.

Front Row on Radio 4 the other night had June Brown on, saying how easy it is for her to remember lines and Tony Jordan telling us that it became a running joke in the scriptwriters meetings that he wanted a Dot episode! I expect it is on Listen Again.

Yes indeed. Amongst the cast and crew, June is notorious for being able to learn her lines easily and with only the need to scan the script. In fact, there is a bit of "friendly rivalry" between June and Babs over remembering lines, as revealed by Babs in a recent interview!

As I haven't seen the episode in question yet until it appears on BBCP, I will refrain from reading too much of this thread. But, I can't wait to see June/Dot in action. best character on EE at the moment.

No point whatsoever that i can think off. I assume EE bosses seen how excellent Gemma was playing the bitch in Hollyoaks, and agreed when Gemma asked them (im sure i read somewhere that she asked them).

Spoiler according to the Sun, not sure about this storyline...

CHEATED Tanya Branning will shock East-Enders fans by burying ALIVE hubby Max. The mum of three, played by actress Jo Joyner, takes revenge — in an stunning storyline — for the love-rat bedding his daughter-in-law. Weeks of scheming will culminate in Tanya seducing Max and then drugging him — before placing him in a coffin and burying it in woods.

Bosses of the BBC soap are certain to come under fire for showing the scenes, which will go out at Easter, before the 9pm watershed. The moment Max (Jake Wood) had his affair with Stacey (Lacey Turner) uncovered attracted 14 million viewers on Christmas Day — the highest ratings of 2007.

A BBC source added: “Viewers will have to wait to find out whether Max lives or dies.” The couple’s relationship will nosedive as they battle over custody of their children. Jo, 29, said: “Tanya is worried Max could take the kids.

“He’s capable of being nasty to get what he wants. He disgusts Tanya, she doesn’t want him back — and feels he is out to hurt her because of that.”

Max is appalled when Tanya’s drug-addict sister Rainey moves in with his family — and he reports his wife to social services. He claims the kids — Abi, Lauren and baby Oscar — are at risk from dirty needles.

Meanwhile, Stacey tries to rebuild her shattered marriage to Max’s son Bradley (Charlie Clements).
