is that the first time they have ended without the usual music?

No, they've done it several times before.

Superb episode.

It was a good episode. I can't help but think it will look out of place on the omnibus though. I think it worked well as an episode but will look odd as a really long scene in an otherwise regular omnibus episode. I wonder how much of the static shot of Dot's door will they leave in as well.

Whilst her performance is good, I can't help but think "Nice Cheap Telly" single character, single location, just one long monologue.

Not really. This episode was recorded just before Christmas over 4 mornings whilst the rest of the cast were filming other episodes.

Really? It flowed very well - in fact the 30 minutes just flew by. I got the sense that it had been recorded in a single block.

Very enjoyable episode.

Am I the only one wondering what the point in this episode was? I'd like to see money going into some more interesting projects to freshen up East Enders, I thought tonight was a bit static.

As much as i would love to disagree with you, i sort of agree. While the acting and all that was good, i don't think overall it added anything to the continuing storyline. It probably would have been better as a special Sunday episode. I think tonight was a more of "look at what we can do, and pull it off well", which yes they did, but still.

I suppose that is why I liked it. I don't watch the show any more and only tuned in because of the "reminder" in this thread.

It harked back to an earlier spirit of EastEnders for me. These days the characters are all too scheming for my taste. There isn't one character I can think of who just is . They're all riddled with sideways-glancing subplots. Every scene ends with a slammed door or a lingering guilty face next to a bewildered Minty-esque blank tableau.

Dot's the last of the characters who need to do less because their persona becomes its own narrative.

I'd like more episodes like this, but its not that show at the moment - and god know's they can't keep asking June to do all the solid acting work.

That's what I loved about it. Too often soaps become too concerned with developing plots and suddenly the plots are the driving force behind the show when it should always, always be the characters.

I don't normally watch EastEnders, but I've just seen this well-advertised episode. June Brown did an excellent job in depressing me for 30 minutes.

I won't be rushing back to watch an episode for at least another five years.

Put The Telly On
I saw the beginning but I kept expecting Ethel and Willie to walk through the door so I turned over.

Well, technically, I was with the family and they wanted something else on.

Needless to say I reckon she did a sterling job - especially remembering the lines! A fantastic actress.

I don't questioning her abilities as an actress, merely the material used, which for the casual viewer reinforced the concept that EastEnders is a very depressing programme.

As for "remembering the lines" - autocue can be an amazingly helpful reminder!

I was most impressed with last nights episode. June Brown is a fantastic actress. I think she carried it off very well indeed. I sniffled in the middle when she said that she loses everyone she's loves. Great ending too.

Nice to see EastEnders breaking from the format every now and again.

Some actors may have cribs written onto the back of cereal packets and other props, but autocue? Doubt it.

I'm an absolute nightmare when it comes to remembering lines, and I did once ask for a plasma screen prompter at the back of the auditorium for a variety show I did once. I was told no.

Its amazing how the lines come into your head when the adrenaline starts pumping!
