'Julia's Theme' has been somewhat overused in recent years. Although it is usually fitting on the occasions it has been used, it no longer holds the significance it did back in the 80s and 90s. They needed to do something different for this episode, and I think the fade to black and special arrangement of the theme was much more effective than Julia's Theme would have been.
I think the Julia's theme would have worked better with a zooming out of pat's dead body (sound wrong, but...)

Pat hasn't been fully well for a long time, there had been hints that she was ill for years. Sadly, things like this can happen.
why do soap characters get diagnosed with incurable cancer or something then promply go home and die within the space of an episode,

I'm surprised no one asked him about what he's been doing since he was last there!
I stand corrected, only tune in occasionally, nice to see David wicks back in and actually played by the original actor for once

I am a wee bit disappointed in Simon May, one of our all-time best TV music composers.
Firstly - "Peggy's Theme" was just a keyshifted Julia's Theme with some added string orchestration
And "Pat's Theme" was just the main Eastenders theme in a minor key, yet the bridge was in the normal major key.
Julia's Theme is enough of a variation on the main theme to be classed as a different piece, in the same way as Barracuda and Always There are to Howard's Way. But these two modern inventions leave me just a little meh.

Julia's Theme used to be used loads in the 80s, then they started rationing them for extra special events in the 90s.
