Has an episode ever ended like that before by fading to black then having black credits?
I don't know but it was very moving. I much prefer the use of black credits for that reason, as it gives you time to digest the programme you have just watched.
I think it did when Ethel died, although I could be wrong there
I wouldn't watch every episode and assume I'm one of the floating viewers who boost these special episodes to high viewing figures but have to say what an impressive episode tonight's was. Having no commercial breaks serves the BBC very nicely on nights like this as the tension was never lost and it was full of content - not laboured nor was anything or any key relationship overlooked. A fine piece of drama and I thought the reworked theme was a more appropriate end than even Julia's theme (or now "Peggy's theme") would have been.

Yes, it faded to black for Ethel's death, and the music used was a wartime number.

I think the Julia's theme would have worked better with a zooming out of pat's dead body (sound wrong, but...)
The BBC Three version last night had a credit squeeze. It was promoting the BBC Action Line rather than "Don't tell the Bride, Russell Howard's Good News about the Movie Mistakes" but it was in BBC Three colours and not the black version which has sometimes been burnt on to the programme in the past.
Talking of BBC Three, they are showing "Fat Pat: That's That" at 22:35 this evening. These things are normally on after the main BBC One show but the channels were still in festival mode yesterday so I suppose there wasn't room to fit it in.

It's being shown first after EastEnders on BBC One tonight.
