EAS for the UK?

I'm concerned about various rumours that the UK is building up it's own Emergency Alert System, mostly due to the fact that they aren't very nice and I find that there is no need because of the lack of alerts we've been given.

For those who don't know, Emergency Alert Systems (formally Emergency Broadcast System) are systems used for television stations that alert viewers about major news like a weather warning, or in the UKs case, a terrorist attack. They consist of sh!t scary tones to grab our attention and freaky Max Headroom robot voices telling us about what's going on, plus weekly tests which are just as disturbing. They are used in various countries, most famously, America.

Does anyone know if the rumours about the UK getting it's own EAS are true?

We get one at 11am every Monday in Plymouth to warn of a nuclear accident/emergency at the Naval Base. You can hear it all over the city.

I don't see a problem with it.

Rosyth Dockyard does NOT have one,

but it does have 16 decommissioned Nuc sub just sitting in the waters

Ah, the sound tones they use are very unnvering. When people hear them, they get all nervous, so even if it's a test, people react, sort of like pavlov's dogs.

typical EAS alert

Well the one here is only on loudspeaker, not on the local radio/tv, unless there is a real emergency.

Rosyth has decomissioned SSBNs, meaning their reactors have been/are being removed. Therefore no more useful to a terrorist than blowing up that container ship sunk off the Cornish coast.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is actually some form of Emergency System here in the East due to the American Air Bases. When I'm on base, I've never seen anything along the lines of such a system in use, but I really wouldn't be surprised if it is there (I know they have a loudspeaker system to send out warnings, which everyone can hear).

I thought there was two, One in the Yard and one at Raleigh

I know that there was talk about a second one being put in because of the weather distorting the sound distance.

Is there ever been a time where the EAS has actually been used in a Real emergency?

I seem to remember when I was working there that we were told a protester had to set off an alarm on the boat (Subs are boats - surface ships are Ships) before anyone would take notice.

They could've done damage, but they didn't. And they got into a "secure base", passed a secure cordon and onto an SSBN. Three entry points.

As is well known, terrorists don't need to get into to bases anyway. It was a demonstration. They didn't do it for real!
