That's quite true - Granada, Central and HTV all had quite different presentation and quite different styles, and that individuality has somewhat been stripped out of television now, so even though for example E4 is a bit cheeky with their continuity ultimately it isn't hugely different to the rest of the 4 family or indeed the dozens of other channels.

Similarly with regional news the three took quite different approaches as I was growing up in the 90s - Granada Tonight was very much cosy from the sofa news, HTV was quite safe whilst Central pushed it a bit and was quite modern. Plus of course in those days it seemed the regional news was relaunched every 2-3 years or so so if you got multiple regions you'd be seeing a refresh on either the BBC or ITV pretty regularly.

It was a bit unfortunate here as YTV took over Tyne Tees, slowly the unique style was eroded away, by 1997 it had adopted YTVs style of broadcasting, it was pretty much over by then, but I can imagine in your area Brekkie, the fun lasted probably till 2002, especially with those wonderful Carlton star idents, luckily I and others were able to sample these delights via other channels Smile

Yes, presentation wise I got the best of both worlds until the generic ITV1 look came in, and similarly with the news to through to the 2004 creation of ITV Plc, though even with that initially it was a chance to see three regions taking their own approach to a generic look rather than the complete uniformity that followed a year or so later with a style that didn't really suit any of the regions.

Programming wise though the advantage was probably more about different stations airing different programmes at different times, especially in daytime, rather than any regional content they deliver. Always though remember Central being quite strong with regional content in the early evening (Our House on Sundays) and primetime, with Granada being better with their late night offerings - though maybe that's because we got Central on our living room TV and Granada on the bedroom TV. HTV we mainly used for local sports coverage - can't really remember any other stand out local programming. I almost certainly watched more on S4C than HTV at the time.

Similarly did anybody get the excitement when going on a holiday in the U.K. and watching the local ITV channel to see what was different?

Indeed, thesedays limited to a very minor variation to the BBC/ITV regional news and who sponsors the ITV local weather, unless you visit Scotland or currently Northern Ireland of course. A bonus if you visited London as you'd get to see Carlton and LWT.

Although I once went to Skegness on holiday back in the day and was disappointed that despite the many hours drive it was still Yorkshire TV

I remember as a nine year old going to Jersey on holiday and finding that the islands had their own station. I didn't know Channel TV existed prior to that.

I remember going to the Granada Studios Tour back in 1998 (pre Internet days) and seeing the idents for Granada, Yorkshire, Tyne Tees and LWT of that time, all in one go. I didn't have to go far that one.

I only got Sky in 2014, so occasionally have a look at STV and UTV. UTV feels very old school by comparison, but as we know that won't be the case for much longer.

I've probably said this before, but the highlight of our holiday to Ayr in 1990 was being able to read the Border edition of TV Times at Tebay services.

Earliest memories were being able to watch TVS on holiday in my family caravan in Kent. We also had Thames/LWT from CP coming through as well.

I also remember going down to Crawley and the WHSmith having both the London and South/South East (TVS) editions of the RT and TV Times.

Flipping that around, what I always noticed on visiting the mainland was that other regions didn't have the softness which distinguished Channel TV from the other channels over here. You could always tell if you had it on 3 from that alone.

I remember a holiday with my parents in Whitley Bay in 1991. First ever experience of the Tyne and Wear Metro, and first ever experience of Tyne Tees. I say that, as that was the first time I ever saw a break bumper. Still remember the "Dickens make it easy" adverts for dickens DIY, now also long gone!

I use to holiday a lot in North Wales so remember Granada Tonight with Bob Greaves and Lucy Meacock. The blue stripe Granada in the North West idents from the early 90s. A fuzzy HTV could also be picked up and I recall that blue clouds HTV Cymru Wales ident.

I also recall it was a novelty, in this pre-digital TV era that you could watch Brookside at a different time on S4C. The fact Home and Away was on at 6pm with Granada Tonight at 6:30pm was strange as well as I only knew about the 5:10/6:00 arrangement you had on Yorkshire.

I also remember that on entering Granadaland, the service station you passed used to have Granada logos proudly displayed on the footbridge almost as if it was welcoming you to the region. I had it in my mind then that Granada service stations only existed in the North West.

Remember watching HTV and S4C while holidaying in Wales when younger, and LWT when we stayed with a relative in London. Was fascinated at having something different from Central and it seemed to come across that LWT were proud of the Saturday night lineup with Blind Date etc.

I remember briefly watching ITV Anglia as a child when visiting my aunt - unfortunately at a time when all ITV regions adopted the generic ITV1 look.

Carlton and LWT were the ones that I remember fondly though, since I lived in London for the most part.
