Channel 4 are to 'turn off' E4 on May 7th, in a bid to encourage under 25s to vote, after less than 50% of 18-25's voted in the last general election.

Can't help but think this is a gimmick, yet can imagine the rumpus if the BBC decided to similarly close BBC THREE for the three hours leading up to 10pm.

Of course it's a gimmick. If they were serious about it, they'd extend the "shut down" to 10pm - most young voters will probably vote in the 7pm - 10pm time anyway (if the queues of student voters who were locked in/out in 2010 are anything to go by).

How many of them would be watching E4 at 7am anyway or want to go out voting at that time of day? Better if they switched it off between 9am and 9pm.

Surely it's too late anyway - as the people they are targeting are probably the largest section of society that has failed to register to vote. An own goal for E4 and Channel 4.

To be far alot of new people have registered to vote. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2015-32401218

Quote:
7.5 million unregistered voters among the 45 million people eligible to vote.

If the above link is correct that figure should be down to 5.2million. still bad but of course some people just dont like voting and many have stayed of due to OTHER reason, jail, poll tax etc

E4 has done this to get people to got and VOTE, on may 7th instead of watching its TV shows.

Wouldn't E4's demographic simply retune to ITV2?

Surely being in prison means you're ineligible, and therefore not part of the 45,000,000 figure.

Thats only 85'000. Of course then there the people who have moved out of the UK, so what another 500'000 and then of course there is new people who have moved into the UK.

BUT the whole point of E4 grimick is to get the 36% of people who couldn't even be arse to vote but were registered to do so.... that is what this is all about.

Have you seen ITV2's schedule. Publicity stunt for sure but could it be seen as potentially trying to influence the outcome?

You can vote until 11pm, can't you, so if they're not staying off air until then what's the point?

And this is not an original idea. Nickelodeon are the originators. They have a campaign in America, where the channel goes off air for three hours to encourage kids to go out and get some exercise. It's called Worldwide Day of Play (despite not being worldwide nor all day).
