I thought I'd post this as apparently it's a big news story for some people:

IMO it's a show that feels like it should end after two or three series like Life on Mars - not one of those shows that can go on for 11 years like Cheers and still make great shows right up till the end, as well as producing an equally superb spin-off that runs for another 11 years like Frasier and also still makes great shows right up till the end.

End up going the same way as House, Lost, and 24 with rating being halved at least!

Although annoying Sky are using such tactics again I tend to agree - it's already feeling repetitive in just it's second season and though I do think it's a show that would have been worth shelling out ony by C4 considering how well it performs for E4, I'm not sure it has more than a couple of seasons left in it. To go on beyond that they'll need to do a Skins and recast completely, but US teen shows would generally rather follow the original cast through to the OAP home than do that.

Sky. Where other channel's hits go to die.

I believe there are at least two more successful seasons to come of this. People generally don't watch it for the stories or the characters but for the music, something which Lost etc. didn't have to keep the viewers.

Someone over on Digtal spy made this point:

Glee is also an advertising tool for the countless albums, singles and merchandise that are being sold on the back of the series. Moving it to (presumably) Sky Living would give it lower ratings and far less potential in that area. So I wonder if that will also be factored in during the bidding war.

this was about a month ago, he does have a point. many of the fans are also younger aswell, I doubt there will have sky in the rooms etc.

I'm surprised Channel 5 didn't bid for it actually, if the programme can turn over a profit on E4 then surely it could on Channel 5. Maybe not at £500,000 an episode though.

How is Glee going to cope when the leading actors all get too old to play their parts, or their characters have been in the final year of high school for 3+ years?

Some of the actors are pushing 30 already aren't they?

I expect them to 'do a Skins' and slowly replace the characters.

And that's why Channel 5 won't make a bid, because it would be a pointless exercise. I don't understand how Sky will make a profit on it with prices like that per episode. Surely people won't sign up to Sky just to watch Glee? Confused

As I understand it from interviews, the current cast are being phased out during the (next) third season, which I believe will see the show's demo share decrease significantly. It's an interesting idea for a series and it's done brilliantly for Fox, but it was never a show that could succeed long-term.

Fame (the TV series) went through exactly the same thing. New cast came in, and some of the teachers changed too.

Although it was a brilliant, brilliant show (and one of the reasons I went off to drama school) It went off the boil after the original students left the show and dwindled to nothing and was cancelled.

The original cast did a nationwide tour of the UK (for some reason they was bigger than Jesus in Britain, more so than the States). You would have thought the Beatles were performing. They filled Wembley and other arenas.

I think they stopped at season 6(?).
