Anybody get anything today? It's not really that easy for me to do DXing with an indoor aerial and living in the shadow of a big hill, but I've been trying it out a bit and got nothing interesting. Welsh channels come over to me just about, but nowhere near as good as in other parts of Bristol. In fact, Portishead can only get S4C and no Channel 4!
One thing I've noticed though, is that my TV is only supposed to do VHF channels 2 to 4 and 5 to 12 (besides the usual UHF channels that is). However, it gives me channels from 1 to 17. I don't know what channel 1 and channels 13 to 17 are, but I get a very faint ITV1 on channel 14, and BBC2 on channel 13.

The best places for DXing are probably on the South and East coasts of the UK which are closer to other neighbouring countries. In the North West we don't get much, the picture quality of S4C tends to get better with this sort of Weather, I seem to recall also picking up Channel 4 from either Yorkshire or Central a few years ago. A friend told me once he managed to get Central on his TV in circumstances like this a few years ago.
Anyway, the closest for me in this Weather is being able to pick up RTÉ Radio 1(FM) in my car whilst driving through Merseyside, though I don't think this counts does it...?

I don't know technically how differently UHF and VHF waves behave, but a few times in the summer I've been able to pick up random Italian, French and Spanish radio stations on FM in the car (from Yorkshire), complete with RDS names. Generally they stick around for up to a few hours and then fade.
Presumably these signals are somehow 'bouncing' through the atmosphere due to the weather conditions. So can TV pictures do the same? Has anyone picked up anything from further afield than directly across the sea?

VHF FM signals tend to do this kind of thing a lot easier it seems, but it all happens for the same reasons. Pre-Classic FM, I used to listen to Kiss FM from London in Bristol, and it would be in and out all day. Sometimes it could even stick around in cystal clear quality for most of the day. I even got a couple of Midlands pirates on a couple of different occasions, although they were quite weak signals. All this, with just a length of wire pinned to the ceiling.
