TBH, although
Millionaire
is improving and is far better than
Duel
(or, if the titles are to be believed,
Du£l
) I'd sooner watch
Sick on a Widow with Barry Sh*tpeas
.

WWTBAM is past it, the refresh did nothing for it. Duel is fast moving, benefits hugely from the accelerator thing.
It's refreshing to see a quiz that it's possible to benefit from good strategy as well as general knowledge rather than sheer luck as in other shows.

Maybe the "fight" could involve Chris Tarrant and Nick Hancock choosing "split" or "steal". If they both choose "steal", Jasper gets the slot
I miss Jasper's stand-up too, but I was listening to him on Steve Wright's show the other week, and he said he likes to move from one type of work to another periodically.
He started off a folk-singer, then went onto stand-up, then acting-- now he's happy doing a quiz show for the time being (although I think he does stand-up occasionally for charity gigs etc) I think!
Not that he needs the money, given his proceeds from Celador..

I think he's genuinely loving this new aspect of his career. He spoke in a recent article about how he enjoys spending time with the contestants before the recording. He's very warm and charming and very generous about giving the contestants the "laugh line" during the opening chat - most of which is discussed prior to taping.
They're currently recruiting contestants for the next series (I just got an email from them asking if I know anyone who might be interested). If you are mildly curious about what Jasper is really like or you just fancy (maybe) winning some cash then give this number a ring:
Production office: 0208 222 4739
or e-mail: goldenballs@endemoluk.com
Go on - they put you up in a nice hotel, treat you like a guest and you get to tape a show in TC8, Television Centre.
Treat yourself.

ITV are desperate to find a big money show to run alongside WWTBAM so it may be worth sitting out the 3 mill figures with Duel.
Grade has said he wants to stick with shows that could be said are underperfoming rather than the old style of binning the run and putting the rest out at 3.20am on a Sunday morning on ITV2.
If changes are going to be made (and a tweak to the format is on the way either this week or next to stem the flood of contestants getting off the show at the first exit offered) then I can see it switching slots with Millionaire on a Tuesday night. A backward scheduling step, yes, but at least it give it chance to find a better pair of legs in a less exposed slot before you bring it back to Saturday night once figures are upto the 5-6 mil mark,
However, if the run is going to be cut short, they still have 4 more to tape at Fountain next month and at the mo, they are still on (I'm hoping to go to one of them).

Duel is much better now than Who Wants to be a Millionaire - a quiz killed off by celebrity specials.
I'd be surprised if Duel lasted it's full 12 week run though, although to be fair despite a very weak schedule ITV haven't pulled anything from it so far. It might even be worth playing the last 5 episodes out for a week at 5pm just to see if the format had potential to capture a daytime audience and return with a lower prize.

Well I guess it's last chance will be when Ant and Dec take up the slot before it, which should give them a better potential audience to inherit.
In hindsight though I think the wisest thing to have done would have been to run it back to back with Millionaire for it's first couple of weeks so that it's shoved directly in the faces of the Millionaire audience before having to survive alone.
It's really difficult now though to know what the threshold is for a programme to be considered a hit. The days of 5m, never mind 10m, seem to be coming to an end and when apart from the soaps, ITV1 is struggling to get more than 4-5m between 8pm-10pm during the week, 3m isn't looking so bad.
It's probably got 2 more weeks though to make an impact - once Thank God You're Here is out of the schedules it would clear the way for ITV1 just to resort to movies instead earlier on a Saturday night.

Agreed. It's exposed where it is. Running it after a frankly awful Dancing On Ice spin-off (where until the tapes of wannabe ice dancers are shown, it's just a 22 min trail for the Sunday show) is not doing Duel any good. It's really a 7.45pm show wandering around post 9pm.
As for what ITV expected from it? I would have thought 5-7million would have been a reasonable expectation. However running neck and neck in terms of share and numbers with CSI New York on Five, would not have been a considered in the Jan/Feb 08 schedule meetings at Grays Inn Road during the last quarter of last year.
Maybe the warning signs were there from week one of Duel. No sponsors bumpers. I would have thought with a budget for a show like that you would have wanted to bolt some companies name to it, and trouser £200,000 back. Plus, no clips of Duel are anywhere to be seen in that current 'ITV Weekend' extended promo running at the mo.
