That's in America - transmitter engineers over here are usually far more sensible and have special cage lifts or cherry pickers to access masts.

Yes - in the UK transmitter masts are operated by very large companies (Arqiva own most these days), who can afford to provide these facilities. The broadcasters effectively out-source their transmission to Arqiva.

In the US many transmitter masts are owned by their individual stations (and their maintenance operations run on much lower budgets) - with transmitter engineers also the people who fix VT machines, and drive their sat/microwave trucks...
