I see. Yeah I'm with you there -- especially as they don't bother with safe zones so they're safely out the way in the far corner of the screen rather than half-way in!
Given that the technology exists to place messages on-screen on an STB, is it not now time to broadcast programmes clean, and have the graphics displayed by the STB's software in a manner that can be cancelled at the viewer's discretion? (I am of course referring to programme advertisements shown within programmes, and the channel ID DOG, not the completely necessary captions within programmes).
Such technology is not up to scrach however. If it were able to display graphics with animations, alpha transparency and other things, I'm sure the broadcasters will be all for it. However, what the boxes can overlay are very similar to GIF's, and the Sky boxes don't allow such overlays to be animated, therefore, the broadcasters won't use it. Plus, with different models of receiver having different functionality, there is no guarrantee it will display such graphics.
I think they are rude and intrusive, I bet the corporate bods would not like the cast of corry to gate crash their bored meeting and play out a dramatic scene right in the middle of them discussing something important.
don't these people understand that viewers watch what is on TV now to watch what is on now, not find out what is on later, I bet the people watching eastenders right now don't really care that 'after you are gone' is on next and 'a bucket of french and saunders' is on later because righ now all they are intrested in is Eastenders, that's why they are watching it.
now most preschoolers yet out of nappies probably undertsand that one so why don't brain dead corporate bosses
Three plonkers in the same thread, how many more? Place your bets now...
Am I right in saying that, from what you just posted, and that three people including me agreed with the concept of DOGs and Astons that you are calling me a plonker?
You really should get a life. It was a perfectly decent thread until you started insulting those who have views different from your own, now your claiming it was hijacked?
I'm not a troll, I work in broadcasting and have a perfectly valid viewpoint, same as most likely everyone else in here until you started with the insults.
This is a question meant for Simon. I've asked him before, but he tries to swerve round it.
Anyway, he often says something along the lines of 'today's children will grow up used to DOGs, thinking they are cool'. If that is the case, what is the problem? If people think they are good, surely it's actually better to have one than not to? I imagine you would say 'the programme looks better with no graphic overlaid onto it', but if they are cool, then surely nobody minds?
Errrm, sometimes I'm shocked to see the comments of Simon considering he's in his 30's. He dislikes playout servers, when frankly it has made a broadcaster job easier, he dislikes almost everything! Except something from the 70's
Call me crazy but DOGs are handy especially in the US, some local affiliates don't even mention what their affiliated with so to find out you have to wait till primetime and find out by flicking through.
The only thing that annoys me with DOGs (station on screen logos, NOT astons) is if they are solid for no reason. take ITV for example it was fine before they coloured it.
I don't actually have a problem with DOGs, I can ignore them most of the time. I have even got used to ITV's coloured DOGs over the past couple of weeks, and it helps promote their identity by using the channel colours (it's small and unobtrusive really).
C4 are the best, as they place their E4/M4 DOGs for 16:9 viewers in the corner, and they are opaque. Five are awful - why not just fill the whole screen with it and be done!
We are on the verge of accepting channel DOGs as the "norm", what I hate now is IPPs and the ever encroaching ECPs. People hate slugs, so why put them on your TV?

My main problem with him is that he wallows in nostalgia. He dislikes modern things, preferring things how they used to be.

There's a Panasonic badge on my VCR, LG badge on my HDD/DVD recorder, Pace logo on my Pace DTVA (Freeview box) and Mitsubishi badge on my TV. I'm not too fussed about that. BUT WHY, if I'm watching ITV2, should I have to put up with the green ITV2 DOG in the top left hand corner? If I want to watch ITV3, why should I have to have the burgundy ITV3 DOG overlaid in the corner of my picture? If ITV insisted on having DOGs, they could have at least stuck to the original semi translucent ones.
As for Five Life and Five US, the sooner they drop their DOGs the better. After five and a half years of having a DOG on their original channel, Channel 5, they removed it when that was rebranded "five" in September 2002. So why did they put DOGs on their new channels Five Life and Five US last year?

Exactly, I mean I bet broadcasters/regions would have killed for that if it had existed then! Enough is enough Simon, your rants are getting tedious.

They are new, and digital channels? I can't believe thats a problem, Five have been very considerate by making them very transparent.
Why do people always complain about these things, without them, television channels would look tacky and ameaturish, all these graphics are what makes tv different then putting in a dvd, tv is run for you, from an external source... if you dont like DOG's or Tickers... Then just buy the DVD...
