I like some reality, Strictly Come Dancing is classy, but I'm hooked to Big Brother.

how does that count as reality exactly? that's a talent contest.

"Reality" TV in my mind is Big Brother, Survivor, Shipwrecked type shows.

Yes it maybe a talent comp, but in america they regard it as "reality".

These days everything from Big Brother to documentaries is classed as 'Reality TV'. Then of course there is Reality TV the channel which shows something else

Indeed no wonder it seems there is so much reality tv on as it does seem to cover about three different genres.

Talent shows shouldn't really be called reality tv, but are.

Also factual documentaries that feature real people (Holiday Showdown, Wife Swap etc) is often called reality tv as well!

Speaking of Reality TV. 200 people applied for "Let's Make A Baby" in which a group a group of strangers would live together then vote each other off one by one based on attractiveness until there are 2 men and 2 women left. They will then form 2 couples and race to conceive a child! Shocked

It is if course a hoax. A new BBC3 documentary aimed to see just how low Reality TV could go by setting up a production company and recruiting applicants for this fake show hosted by 'Big Brother' losers Makoisi & Craig (who weren't in on the joke either). 200 people really were up for it. I just don't see the point of the extended coverage on the secondary channels meself.

First nothing happens for hours on end & any potentially interesting bits are bleeped for legal reasons, so if Celeb X sh*gs sheep on Hampstead Heath, we won't hear about it, because the f**king lawyers won't let us!

Highlights I can cope with!

The live coverage on secondary channels is designed for fans - and there are enough hardcore fans who'll watch it to significantly bump up the channels ratings.

The original question posed is pretty stupid and narrow minded. It's not about one genre of TV dominating the schedules - it's about getting the mix right.

I'm a huge Big Brother fan but that doesn't mean I watch every reality show going - in fact I deliberately avoid several which appear to be nothing but cheap imitations.

And often shows are quite lazily branded reality TV - I don't consider talent shows like Pop Idol and The X Factor to be reality TV at all!

I'm not a massive fan of celebrity reality TV either - I'm loving Celebrity Big Brother but would much rather watch the regular edition!

As for drama - put on a good drama like Shameless and I will watch it - but Iike reality shows, I won't watch things that have been done to death, so avoid alot of the detective dramas and cosy feel good stuff.

For a period reality TV did seem to be the schedulers first choice, but now drama has begun to fight back.

It's all about the balance - and I think the balance between reality TV and drama is about right. Documentaries are also much more high profile in the schedules than they were five to ten years ago - the only thing missing really is some decent homegrown comedy!
