Presumably C4 on Sky is the London version wherever you are?

On Sky channel 4 have all 6 versions. I get North on 104 and the other 5 on add channels if I wont them. If someone in wales with sky goes to 184 and looks at 4 tel page 399 it will either say HFR London, or HFR North or HFR Ulster etc etc.

Yes, 399 tells you your Channel Four region, both on terrestrial and Astra.

In Wiltshire, we get something called "South/East".

I have always wondered why Scotland never got a seperate Channel 4 like Wales. They could have had Gaelic programmes in the schedule supplemented with english channel 4.That could have been called C4S!!!!! Channel 4 Scotland. What does everyone else think? :

A matter of politics, and practicality. Wales has always shouted more loudly about it's heritage than Scotland does - including a lot of interest in preserving it's own language. Therefore there was a large investment in the part of both the BBC and HTV in providing Welsh language programmes. But, operating bilingual television services is not without it's problems, and so the 4th channel offered a perfect opportunity to offload the Welsh language programmes from BBC Wales and HTV.

In Scotland, there is less call for Gaelic. TeleG only runs for 1 hour a day, and Gaelic speakers have now dropped so low that Gaelic in Scotland is only 1 step away from being declared a dead language.

There just wasn't enough interest in Gaelic to justify a special 4th channel for Scotland.

You say there wasnt enough interest but Scotland did acquire STV2 for a few years - ITV2 wasnt broadcast in its original state in Scotland but rebranded as STV2 with a larger chunk of Gaelic programmes.

In my view it didnt really serve any purpose apart from get rid of some of the awfully cheap regional programmes off STV1???

Its just hit me Scottish tv had started this putting numbers at the end of channel names malarkey. STV2 - and they are the first ones to complain about ITV1 being mentioned on 'their' channel all the time!
