I was just wondering why S4C still closes down at night as its english counter part 'channel 4' no longer does and has been 24 hours for a good few years now. You'd expect it to follow suit just like channel 4.Because really it is Channel 4 Wales! 'Sianel Pedwar Cymru' I wonder if eventually S4C will be re-branded to Channel 4 Wales much like ITV1 has done with HTV now calling itself ITV1 Wales.
I have always wondered why Scotland never got a seperate Channel 4 like Wales. They could have had Gaelic programmes in the schedule supplemented with english channel 4.That could have been called C4S!!!!! Channel 4 Scotland. What does everyone else think? :

The problem is for S4C is that when it closes down it never does it for more than an hour and frankly is pointless, but then who is watching S4C at 5am? They probably cannot afford to do so and saves money and has no mess in the schedule.

I think people have wanted a Channel 4 Scotland, but I don't think this will happen. Though they used to opt out for Scotland during ITV Schools on Channel 4, but instead control would switch to Scottish TV I assume and I think they did this until 1993, so then would have been the best time to do so.

Though did Channel 5 have an opt out for Northern Ireland in it's early days, or am I just dreaming this?

I too think the S4C closedown is now pretty pointless!

Seeing as none of you live in Wales, your opinions are quite frankly, worthless. Razz

Your first point - as you've pointed out yourself S4C is called Channel 4 Wales - so won't need to rebrand.

And secondly re: Scotland. It's all politics. Scotland have TeleG on digital TV, but I think that's an hour a day.

Think before you type another completely pointless comment. As if a Welsh language broadcaster would use an english name. Of course, they could use the Welsh for "Channel 4 Wales", which is... Rolling Eyes

Anyway Channel 4 doesn't own S4C.

Now, THERE'S an interesting potential discussion, Whataday.

Should Sianel Pedwar Cymru, which is Welsh for Channel Four Wales, be renamed Channel Four Wales, which, in Welsh, would be Sianel Pedwar Cymru?

Shall we see if we can get that discussion to run to twenty odd pages?

Further to my comment in another thread, I DO reckon his full name is Richard Cranium!

Not sure, but it is - and always has been possible on terrestrial Channel 5, although AFAIK it's only been used for adverts.

Ch5 can configure any of their transmitters to broadcast something diffrent - they have (or had, it might have changed since) 5 seperate feeds of channel 5 via satellite and each transmitter can be changed to rebroadcast a diffrent feed. So they could switch all the NI ones to region 5 and then use the other 4 for the rest of the country
