> (I've never understand the Central/Tyne Tees/TVS type view that you should have IVC everywhere but prime time, surely prime time is exactly where you should use the strongest type of continuity you have).

Erm, where did that come from Chris? Tyne Tees always had IVC in prime time. Not on every single link, for sure, and often before rather than after the break (which is possibly better anyway as it entices people to keep watching through the ads).

They experimented with no-IVC at prime-time for a couple of months in around 1990, but it soon came back.

Central and TVS maybe can be accused of this (I don't know, I didn't see them when they had IVC) but not TTTV! They were one of the biggest fans of the method.

I have to say though that I agree with every other word you said Chris. And it has to be said that you could replace the word TSW with Tyne Tees and Ian Stirling/Roger Shaw etc with Bill Steel/Neville Wanless etc and every word would be equally as valid. I notice that TTTV has gone very quiet recently with regard to their boasting of their strong station identity and affinity with the region; wonder why that is then....

Don't know about Central, but towards the end of TVS they had the 'interesting' situation of out-of-vision throughout the day and evening, but in-vision through the night for the 'Late Night Late' segment.

There was even a still of an in-vision, overnight, naked bottom in the TVS DLS for a time, but that's ANOTHER story!

I wonder if that's still (no pun intended) about?

The problem with ITV continuity is one of a lack of time .....once the comms have been added, the promos placed and the programme start times agreed ...the announcer gets what little time is left ....and as ITV is a network the timing can't be expanded to accomodate the announcer like on the Beeb or C4 (except at fixed junctions ) -so the announcer just gets whats left and tries to make the best of it .....!
In the days of IVC the announcer was treated more as a major part of presentation and promos were considered 'fillers' in those days - not the aggresive marketing tool they are used as now -
back then promos could be dropped to give the announcer more time - today this would be unthinkable!!!
ECPs are a mess - agreed.....get used to them ...they are (sadly) here to stay......

I bet all those watching were cringing tonight..

The GMG North announcer introduced the regional news by saying '..but now the late news from our region'

This doesn't happen that often, I'd say that 95% of regional programming gets a regionalised announcement these days.

Plus, they've started having an ident before the Local Weather these days as well, also with a regionalised announcement 'But first on Yorkshire, the latest weather from Jo'

I'm still glad that, last time I went home to Burton, the Central West announcer said 'And now on Carlton, we go over to your local Central News team.'

Central are unique in the Carlton world in that, not only are they a 'sub-region of Carlton', but they have sub-regions of their own. So, they HAVE to keep a unique name to refer to the 'clump of three' regions, West, East and South. You could NEVER call them Carlton West, Carlton East and Carlton South, because they would be ambiguous to London and WestCountry.

You get a similar situation for Westcountry, Mark.

Although it's not full programmes at 6pm, there are sub-opts part way through the programme for Truro (off the Redruth transmitter), Barnstaple (off Huntshaw), Plymouth, or Plympton to be precise (off Caradon Hill) and I THINK, Exeter (off Stockland).

Anyone down in the pointy bit of England care to confirm Exeter?

If we could just ackowledge the fact that what is officially called the Redruth transmitter is almost universally called the Four Lanes transmitter locally because it's in Four Lanes (which is NEAR Redruth) and not actually IN Redruth it would be spot on.

Just to enter into the spirit of the way this topic is progressing. I walked the length of the main street in Redruth and couldn't find a single wool shop. To this day that knitting pattern remains unused.

Talking of Footballer's Wives, is it going to be a hit or a miss?http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

ACKNOWLEDGED Chris, gladly. I was just using the description the bulk of the populace would recognise.

But if you REALLY want to start me off on Cornish transmitter sites, why the heck is the Fowey transmitter across the river in Polruan?

And Phil, are you talking complete rubbish, or am I still intoxicated from last night? Why would a cricketers' wife need a sewing shop in Camborne?

Bring back Michael St John, I say.  'It's now a few twinges past midnight'.

Oh, what station did he work for, then?
I only know him for doing all the competely weird voiceovers for Chris Morris on things like The Day Today or Blue Jam.

Michael St John was HTV West, back in the in-vision days of the seventies, Blake.

Great personality, but couldn't tell the time to save his life.  After years of Don Hill-Davis, the presentation boss, trying to get him to read the clock correctly, they both gave up and Michael made a 'thing' of it and just used to say 'it's a few twinges to ten', or similar, while the clock was on the screen.

Michael's twinges became famous throughout the west.

He later married Annie, who also did in-vision for HTV, but she committed suicide later.  Long story, well documented elsewhere.
