I know the Queens speech is broadcast at 3pm on Crimble Day over here, but what is the earliest time in the UK you can hear it by logging on to another broadcasters webstream on Christmas Eve?

The obvious one to head over to is the ABC radio & Radio NZ down under, but I can't find any schedules from Christmas past on-line.

Anyone know what time the earliest broadcast of message is broadcast locally, and what time it would be over here?

Cheers..

Back in the days when I used to get my hands on a tape copy about a week in advance, the embargo instructions always stated something like "not to be broadcast before 9.30am GMT, anywhere in the world".

The "GMT" bit was very specific, so I doubt if that's changed at all.

Somebody told be a few years back that, since the dumping of the morning transmission on Radio 4, the embargo had been moved to 3pm GMT, but I couldn't be 100% certain on that, as it's second hand information.

I understand it's now recorded far closer to Christmas, so the chances of getting a copy a week in advance are pretty slim, compared to the old days of the recording being done in the first week of December, like it was in the seventies.

[EDIT]
Having just found my archive copy of the 1978 tape, which I received on the 15th December that year, the exact embargo words are "Not to be transmitted, or played on any studio equipment, before 09:30 GMT on 25/12/78.

They obviously didn't even trust you to preview it in a studio and be certain you were in pre-fade!

If anyone's interested, it ran 9' 02" and the (incredibly predictable) out cue was "....a very happy Christmas".

It would appear the message goes out around the Commonwealth at 3pm UK time, which I take to mean it goes out at 3pm UK time everywhere regardless of local time.

Off the Wiki:

Quote:
[Her Majesty The Queen] has delivered the traditional Message each Christmas with the exception of 1969, and they have been fully televised since 1957. The message is broadcast in the UK at 3pm (15:00 GMT), and broadcast around the Commonwealth. In non-Commonwealth countries the Christmas Message can be heard on BBC radio or television, or can be downloaded at any time after 15:00 GMT on the Royal Family's website or other websites.

I'm pretty sure ABC Australia don't get it until Christmas Night at about 7pm or 9pm.

What happened in 1969 then?

That was the year Charlie became Prince of Wales, wasn't it?

Didn't they run the "Royal Family" documentary instead of doing a specific Christmas gig?

I was working last Christmas Day and saw it being fed out by oneif the agencies. The embargo was something odd like 1500 GMT but IIRC there was some sort of allowance for commonwealth countries depending on the timezone who could play it earlier. It was a very complicated

Seems strange, I wonder how could you be sure that the tape actually had something on it or whether it could be played by your equipment? Imagine cueing it up at 0930 and discovering it was a blank tape.

It always used to get previewed in the newsroom on a similar machine to the ones in the on-air studios, but one not connected to anything that could possibly put it to air.

I think that was what was implied by the embargo wording; it was certainlty what happened in practice.

1969: No Christmas Message was broadcast in this year, apparently as the Queen felt that she had been on television too much due to Richard Cawston's The Royal Family documentary. A repeat of an episode from the documentary was broadcast on Christmas Day.

Thank you for that glorious expansion of what I'd already said.

Well, it's come from the reliable Wikipedia, which lists your name as 'Nixk Harvey' and claims that you died of suffocation after being bitten by the Poodle of the Apocalypse in 1683. Wink
