Corrie and Emmerdale are the only soaps ITV have. The Bill and The Royal are not soaps, they are serial dramas which is different to a soap opera.

Its not the amount of soaps they have, its the amount of episodes which are the problem, but if its making money for them then why should they not show soaps? Theres clearly a demand so they might as well capitalise on it. No problem at all IMO.

They have just as many soaps as BBC1 (who have Doctors and Eastenders) and five (who have Neighbours and Home & Away) but they never get complaints on forums because of the way in which those soaps are scheduled.

Maybe ITV should cut back on the number of episodes, perhaps making it 3, 1 Hour shows a week?

Although at TV awards they are all considered as Serial Dramas.

I'd say The Bill, Holby and Casualty slot into the soap category due to their year round nature.

Well Casualty does take a summer break but IMO The Bill, Holby and Casualty are dramas not soaps, even though they have become quite soapy recently. They often contain self contained storylines which are over in 1 or 2 episodes.

For about two weeks, and generally catches up with additional Sunday episodes.

Actually it takes about a month off Mid Aug-Mid Sept. Think each series is 48 episodes which includes when they have 2 episodes on some weekends (Saturday and Sunday)

For arguments sake I'd class them as soaps, simply because they air year round without a break (bar Casualty which takes a few weeks off) - regardless of content they permanently fill up the schedule in the same way that EastEnders and Corrie do.
