and no mention of Torchwood for the 2nd week on the trott!!!!

Torchwood was mentioned last week..........

Which scene, I've watched twice and not heard it mentioned, unless I have completely missed it (and that is not impossible) Smile

I thought it was a bit too alien-like for me. I'll have to watch it again tomorrow and try to understand what the heck was going on tonight! Embarassed

Proper Dr Who and the direction was back on track after past few weeks when it has been, putting this mildly, damn boring and very samey!!!!

At last they have gone off-world and to a planet that does NOT look like earth (its only taken almost 2 series') and no mention of Torchwood for the 2nd week on the trott!!!!

I didn't bother with the 2nd part of the Cybermen story, or last week's Coronation episode because I'm also bored with too many earth - particularly "London" - based episodes. I thought the whole parallel earth thing for the Cybermen was a step too far and just an excuse to be based on "earth" again, and with Rose wanting to see her dead dad again - yawn. Then the 1950s episode looked like some easy period piece, chockablock full of nostalgia and cliché, so I didn't bother to watch. However, I'll try and get back into the series and watch the repeat of tonight's episode I think Smile

I watched the first 30 mins of last weeks episode, and I was totally bored. I gave this weeks a miss but I maybe try and catch the repeat tomorrow night as it sounds quite good.

If you want to see Doctor Who do a parallel universe story well then I recommend Inferno, well acted a believable villain in Professor Stahlman and a real sense of doom. It dumps all over the Cybermen two parter.

Did anyone's SKY go off for about 5 seconds during Saturday's transmission?

(I was watching BBC London)

I've had to retape BBC3 on SKY + tonight, cos of it!

(Hope it's worked, as I was watching & taping TOTP on the other Sky box!)

BTW if Torchwood fails, will Dr Who become like it was during Pertwee's UNIT era - base itself on earth and become a member of Torchwood?

I don't quite see what you're getting at.

In the Christmas Invasion, it was made pretty clear that the Doctor doesn't really believe that Torchwood should have been used when it was, suggesting that he doesn't really like the thing.

I don't know, I reckon it will have a cult following but ultimately fail. It'll try to be proper sci-fi, but that Captain Jack character is just a little too gay to be of any use.

This week's DW was top notch by the way- a real modern-day classic.

Well, the Doctor didn't like UNIT at first, but ended up working for them. Unit's only saving grace, for the doctor, was his friendship with Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge Stewart - just like the friendship that built between the Doctor and Captain Jack during the few episodes in Season 1 of new Doctor Who.

What I was geeting at was that UNIT did have their own one-off series which failed miserably (just like K9 and Company) - therefore it was more successful as a division within Doctor Who rather than being a success as a stand alone show.

Ah I see- I get you now.

I think you could well be right long-term. Torchwood is specifically aimed at adults, and will presumably go out in a 9pm slot on BBC Three (maybe 10:35 on BBC One repeats).

It's going to be hard to promote- can the BBC morally push an adult programme with trails around Doctor Who? Surely they have to promote it as a completely separate entity so the kids don't tune in.

If anyone's still wondering about the Torchwood reference in episode 7, listen to the policeman talking in the background while the Doctor is talking to faceless-Rose.

What makes you think they'd do that? If the spin-off fails, the last thing they should do is try and keep it alive by grafting it back into the parent series.

Did it?
