I just think this whole this is ridiculous. Would you have a woman play James Bond? No. Would you have a man play Wonder Woman? No. The same applies to me.

Rant over.

Actually hilarous. What a thought process! No wonder you love Piers Morgan so much.

Won't someone think of the poor unrepresented white men please...

As a supporter of equality, I hope both the male and female contenders had the same chance as each other of getting the part, and that Jodie was, in fact, the best out of the choices.

Probably not. I really don't expect those charged with finding the new Doctor were given the brief of finding anyone. At some point early on they'd have to have decided to cast a woman.

As I say, it's their programme, they can cast whoever they want for whatever reason. Casting isn't an equal opportunities exercise for obvious reasons.

Thought I'd offer my view for the 0 of you that care. I'm against this but not just because "the doctor's a man isn't he".

I'd call myself a feminist meaning I want equality for the sexes. I see feminism as making sure no gender is discriminated against and we allow equality to become part of society not change society to bring about a fake equality. To me this appointment is an example if the latter. This is making a change to try and make the BBC seem like supporters of feminism when to me it shows them to support the irritating extreme feminism which gives the cause a bad name. In a truly equal society we would respect each sex for what they are. Men play men and women play women.

How do "men play men" and "women play women"?

James Bond was written to be a man. Wonder Woman was written to be a woman. The Doctor was written to be an alien. That's the key difference.

It's just as well that nobody's going to force you (UBox and others) at gunpoint to watch her Doctor Who episodes then, isn't it?!

I wonder how many of the naysayers (both within TVF, and elsewhere on t'interweb) are even fans of Doctor Who at all?

And how many are merely fans of the gender/sexism/equality (etc) debate that has arisen from Whittaker's casting, and are therefore jumping into discussions that are supposed to be about a programme in which they have little/no actual interest?

I've seen the Wonder Woman argument on Twitter today and didn't think anyone would be stupid enough to use it here Rolling Eyes

As for a female James Bond... Sounds like a quite a good idea, would watch that. Could call her Jane Bond

Or better yet, have Jane Bond co-exist with James Bond. That way, everybody's happy.

Well, maybe they'll cast a female as the assistant too and they'll get embroiled into a love affair and the tardis will re-generate with rainbow colours. That'll please everyone. Very Happy

Why are so many things frowned upon, it's like the sexist line that two men shouldn't present the news together that's rumbled on social media when it's happened - but when it's two women it's deemed perfectly acceptable.

That would be perfect. As would a female time 'lady' coexisting with a male time 'lord'.

I greatly appreciate being called stupid Very Happy thanks! I just think it's a good example.

EDIT - Can I open the question of whether we can expect a male of female assistant?

A better example is probably Tomb Raider. Imagine a Liam Croft, Lara's long-lost son Wink

Because this is a show where time travel is possible, all forms of the Doctor co-exist.

Video already uploaded earlier in the thread. Keep up.

Irrelevant. The video was used to emphasise the point.

Why not just post a reference to the earlier upload? Shall I post the upload a third time to emphasise the point even more Rolling Eyes

One: I had to make a point quickly and succinctly. No time to go back through the thread to find where the video was posted, and even then, anything else around it would likely detract from the point I wanted to make.

Two: Not everybody reads threads all the way through.

Three: I do other things outside of TV Forum you know. That's a hard concept for some to understand, that somebody can actually live a life outside of the forum, but that's real life.

It's a terrible example as the name of the character is quite blatantly gender-specific.
