I believe the Doctor was given another full set of regenerations recently (I also am not a fan).

I'm no fan so I stand to be corrected but wasn't there supposedly a limit of 13 on the number of doctors, so is she the last?

To be honest the regeneration (not the casting) does seem to be a final throw of the dice as I think any other primetime drama who'd seen ratings plummet in the way Doctor Who's ratings have over the last few years would have been axed.

Steven Moffat found a way around that in Matt Smith's last episode, although I couldn't tell you how.

I think the only thing that kept the show going is the worldwide sales.

How many other prime time shows are sold around the world? The show is iconic. Not only that merchandise. The good Doctor is a cash cow for the Beeb. It ain't going anywhere just yet.

The merchandise market is dead. No more 5" figures because of poor sales, and the new 3.75" range flopped. DW doesn't even have a section in the Argos catalogue anymore.

As a former avid fan of the show, I'd say the merchandise market is just 5% of what it used to be compared to 2006/07/08. It's been declining for a while, but fell off the cliff when Capaldi took over.

Well I think she'll be brilliant and will give the show the shot in the arm it needs. If you've only seen Jodie as "grieving mother" Beth in Broadchurch I can understand why you might need to be won over. She's brilliant in that but you wouldn't think "Doctor!". But if your first assumption is she's only got the role because of box ticking then, I'm sorry, but you are just a dick.

OH no, that not getting thrown around, I have nothing against that woman, but to say stupid comments like that is not helpful. Zipper

I'm not sure it's any less helpful than claiming it's a box-ticking exercise - for which there is absolutely no evidence.

Brilliant news for Jodie and for the programme, it'll be new ground, and with Chris Chibnall taking over as show runner it'll be a new life brought to the programme.

Brekkie, when Matt Smith's 12th Doctor was coming to an end they had to write something into the script as they had regenerated too many times (when factoring in War Doctor), but the timecard's grant them a new cycle of regenerations.

That and the fact that many people still actually are watching it....just differently. Through time shifting and iplayer. It's not a cheap show to make. If the ratings "collapse" really was as steep as people like to make out it simply wouldn't still be in production. No matter how popular it is in Botswana.

Some are very happy, some are accepting, some are unhappy. All are equally valid points of view. It's a polarising appointment and it will get a polarising response.

It did need reinvention and probably a bit of a rest. But this is certainly a shake up.

It's a bit much to say ratings have plummetted. For what is effectively a 12-year-old show it's doing pretty well for itself (and moving earlier in the year has doubtless had a negative effect of its own). AI scores have slid a bit but Moffat's average is only one point lower than RTD's. I think there is some truth in some of the criticism of the writing, and perhaps in hindsight Moffat should have left a year ago, but he's gone now and we've got a new Doctor and a new showrunner.

There have always been naysayers, ever since they turned a perfectly good show about a policeman hearing a funny noise into some nonsense about a time travelling grandad.
