Is it overkill or is it something to get excited about?

It couldn't be any worse than the last Doctor Who spin-off!

Let's hope the opening sequence won't feature Jack Flash jogging, typing, drinking wine on a veranda and driving a mini metro. Sorry, a CONVERTIBLE mini metro... how could I think that such a cheap car would have been used!

Overkill definitely. They are going too far after just one reasonably successful series. They might end up regretting it. I hope they won't have to though of course.

Yeah, i think they're really milking this whole Doctor Who thing. I enjoyed the recent series but they don't need to rub it in our faces.

In regards to Torchwood: "two many cooks...."

I think we should at least give it a chance. After all Buffy spawned Angel which went on to be reasonably popular.

For those who think this is like spinning off a series after just one season, don't forget that Dr Who has been going since the 60s, it isn't a new show that started this year...

(And it can't be worse than the previous Dr Who spin-off can it? Glad I'm not the only one who "appreciated" the opening titles...)

Nice to see some accurate journalism in there - This Life was about a group of young lawyers in London , not Bristol. The Indy's 'Media Editor' is obviously confusing it with Teachers , which is about a group of young teachers in...Bristol. Obviously This Life wasn't 'groundbreaking' enough for him to have actually watched it.

Yep - This Life was so London-based it is difficult to believe anyone who watched it could make that kind of mistake.

Yes but i regard the new series as totally separate. Not only are they 16 years apart, they are totally different in style.

The thing i don't like is i just think that the Captain Jack character is weak. He's good for a companion to bounce off the Doctor and Rose but i really don't think he can hold his own show. Russell T Davies has proved he can't write decent sci-fi also (the good bits in the new Doctor Who were the bits that were totally non-scifi), so i don't see how this is going to work.

At least he didn't call it The Life like John Barrowman did yesterday on Loose Women.

Not that I was watching it. It was just on, that's all...

Yep - but not everyone does. I certainly don't. I watched Dr Who growing up, and now watch the new series as an adult. It is different - but then so are the Hartnell and McCoy shows from each other.

The series has always evolved - there were originally 6 part stories, and by the 80s there were sometimes just two-parters.

Sure the production values have evolved - but then you'd expect that.

I think it will be interesting to see how a companion evolves without the Dr. Captain Jack was a more substantial character - and had a bit of a back story - so was slightly more developed than many of the companions.

I'm not sure that I see a difference between good and bad writing and good and bad sci-fi writing. I think sci-fi works best when it is treated as a fact of life within the story - rather than being a specifically addressed issue?
