I certainly enjoyed last night's episode, but I'll probably watch it again and see things that I hadn't noticed the first time round.

The only problem with story arcs which stretch across a whole series, or even more than one series, is that they tend to leave occassional viewerss confused, or possibly at a disadvantage.

The new series certainly looks promising: but despite all my efforts, I cannot bring myself to find Amy Pond as anything but an irritant. I don't know whether that's more to do with the character or the actress, as I also have to skip through items with Karen Gillan on 'Doctor Who Confidential'.

I'm not sure it's fair to disregard the regular viewer by not including them.

I was never much bothered by Amy last year, but I find I'm warming to her more now that Rory's along for the ride as well.

For the real nitpickers out there, I noticed that in the "Previously..." they used a different shot of the TARDIS appearing in the Oval Office, without Secret Service agents in the foreground. It also looks like they've gone back to the old-style windows, without the blacked out panels.

I thought part 1 was brilliantly funny ("So what's going on?" "Err, nothing. We're just friends!") and part 2 was brilliantly chilling. I just watched it again, and had (ironically) completely forgotten about the woman with the eyepatch, whoever the hell she is. My money's on her having something to do with the sad clown.

I do think, though, that they ruined a perfectly poignant point about 60s-era American racism by turning it into yet another "it's okay to be gay" joke. To quote Lisa Simpson, "We are used to it, you do this every year!"

I hope Moffatt doesn't keep dropping things in for the next year as well - I like story arcs but there is such a thing as planning too far ahead.

I wasn't suggesting that they disregard extended story arcs as a dramatic device, but I count myself as a regular viewer, and still found some of the references to be obscure.

I'm probably not the 'sharpest tool in the box', but if I missed some of them, then surely occassional viewers would've missed them completely or found them to be irrelevant and confusing. Surely that wouldn't encourage them to return?

The little girl's
regeneration scene
was the best acted of all, in the new Who. The actress got it spot on.

Personally I'm loving the new intensity, adding more depth to the show than ever before, and really brings Who up to date for the international audience that receives it.

So many unanswered questions, so many riddles to keep final viewing figures high over the coming weeks! Laughing

That's also true. I admit, I was taking your post at face value - you're right that they can become a little overwhelming.

Definitely - but also, a reminder of how one forgets even the biggest of plot points! I had forgotten about that scene until I watched Confidential earlier today.

9th Doctor fans once again let down by Eccleston's comments with Graham Norton on the radio:
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/s7/doctor-who/news/a317398/christopher-eccleston-rules-out-who-return.html

Quote:
After insisting that his only intention was to do one series to "make that show a success", Eccleston balked at Norton's question as to whether he'd reprise the role of the Ninth Doctor for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary in 2013.

"No, I never bathe in the same river twice," Eccleston said.

Bah! What a spoilsport. Tennant, McGann, McCoy, both Bakers and Davison would be happy to return, Eccelston is the only one who wouldn't who is still alive.

Tom Baker was the same after he left, he has always regretted not being in the five doctors

In fairness to him though, he had been in the role for a very long time and wanted to move forwards (and not be typecast).

Besides, there'd be much more fun to be had from revisiting the Eighth Doctor.

true, did he want to reprise the role when they relaunched it in 2005.
