After watching the the last season doctor who, and loving Matt Smith as the doctor. I have been looking forward to the new season that starts next year. But i have still not seen any of the original Doctor Who series. are they worth going back and watching?

They are in my view, but in case you've never watched old British drama series, especially old BBC Sci-fi, you have to expect the production values to be, for want of a better word, awful in places.

Also, the stories instead of going on for one 45 minute episode like the new series does, go on for up to six 25 minute episodes mostly.

But if you're ok with that, then they are definitely worth a watch. What they lack in special effects, explosions etc they make up for in brilliant storytelling and characters.

If you want a place to start off from, most people seem to like the Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker stories the most. Most people also say that the show just isn't worth watching from Colin Bakers series onwards, but I disagree. I think Sylvester McCoy especially had some great stories like Remembrance of the Daleks and Curse of Fenric. But there are some bad ones too as the show was on its last legs by then.

Sylvester McCoy was a good doctor, the problem was the BBC had lost faith in the programme by the, with major budget constraint.

Was anyone convinced by Sylv's 'angry' scenes? (The scene in 'Battlefield' springs to mind!)

Other that I haven't got a problem with him.

By the way, would anyone recommend buying the Season 23 Trial Of A Time Lord boxset at a cheap price(around the £20 mark?)?

(I was going to get it from the CEX buy sell exchange place I recently got Special Branch & the BBC box set of the original 70's Survivors series from. 'Kamelion Tales' is there too, along with one of the Matt Smith DVDs which I found surprising as they've only just come out recently!)

Sounds better - after all we get Top Gear twice a year, so why not Dr Who?

Nothing to do with the falling viewing figures then?

Doctor Who in Spring/Summer always felt misplaced anyway. It would make sense to move it to the Autumn full stop. It would mean a much longer wait between each series but so what? That drivel Moffat was spouting about kids not being able to go longer then 6 months without their favourite show was so patronising. Rolling Eyes

This post from someone on Gallifrey Base called Constellation Scorpio. He has behind the scenes knowledge.

So, the news is out!!

Thank god for that. I had originally heard this approach for season 6 way back (as I've said before) being mooted at the time of 'Amy's Choice' was being shown. Such a pity (and hugely frustrating) that a few people (a very few) kept telling me that this would 'Never Happen..! Smile)

I think there was some talk about adopting this for series 5 ('Vampires in Venice' being the end of Part 1...imagine 'Amy's Choice' as the season opener...the Dr and Amy really hAVE been apart for 5 years...haven't they???), but it was felt that Matt's first season should have been the full straight 13 week run to avoid it looking like a 'lessening of confidence'. The fantastic (*and aknowledged) way the series has held it's own against shifting time-slots, scorching days and football has only made the BBC even more proud and aware of the series than ever before. It's gonna be around for quite sometime.

There are a few more 'changes' or 'tweaks' going on, but we'll all hear about them in time. Seriously folks, next year is gonna be phenomenal. Matt is gonna hit major player status (even more than this year) and the move to the new studios and the anniversary (in planning terms) is already being looked at.

From next year then we're gonna have the Easter premier (that which feels 'home' for the new series Fans,) and the more 'Traditionalist 'Darker evening' stories too...and it would appear (despite what I'd first heard) the Christmas specials will continue too... This is really good news..spread over the year like that it'll give the series a higher profile than before. (If that's even possible...)

It's going to get even better! Smile

Forget the above spiel, let's just hope the writing seriously improves, along with better acting from the main characters.

The last series was highly praised, and in most fans eyes was a serious improvement on the Tennant years.

Besides, if this article is anything to go by, one of the characters wont be around for much longer:

Most, eh?

Wonder how you'll back that assertion up.

Why are there so many cynical, pedantic and belittling people on this forum? Feels at times like it's of a previous generation that's gone bitter over the years. Laughing

I shouldn't need to back it up. Viewing figures and highly praising critics should manage that.

The viewing figures aren't falling (this has been discussed to death over on Gallifrey Base) more people are watching on catch up via iplayer & BBC Three. If anything the viewing figures are the same as the last 4-5 years.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Matt Smith's acting at all, and although I liked Amy Pond & Karen herself I understand that some may not have liked her.
