So if David Tennant is appearing in the episode on Saturday, it means they must have decided that Christopher Ecclestone wasn't going to be returning even before the series started transmission in March. Why did the BBC then say they were looking for possible alternatives for the role and Tennant was a favorite when obviously, he had been picked ages before????

OR - the only other explanation is that the last episode has been filmed only recently once they had picked Tennant as the new Doctor Who.

Please explain...

It would also explain why the beeb commissioned a new series so quickly. After the 1st episode infact.

They could have just filmed a new ending for the episode?

In some of the interviews with RTD though, he says David will appear in the Christmas Special - which will also round up some of the loose ends of the last episode in this series...

What's on TV also says that David Tennant will be in it Very Happy Apparently this will be the episode that we are introduced to him..

Surely it'll end with Christopher Eccleston regenerating into David Tennant. Come on, it's pretty predictable stuff!

I'm sure I read that the Christmas specials would be the last episodes that Christopher Eccleston will appear in...There can't be two doctors around at the same time!! I'll be interested to see how the regeneration storyline will work, I doubt it will be as straightforward as you think.

I'm sure they can be around at the same time - there was a Peter Davison one to mark the 21st year or something called the "Five Doctors" where Patrick Troughton and an actor playing William Hartnell's Doctor appeared with Peter Davison. Tom Baker was stuck in some time loop thing (because Tom Baker wouldn't appear) and they cut in some clips of Jon Pertwee that had never been used before.

I'm no expert on this, but I think it is possible (don't know how!) that more than one Doctor can be around at the same time.

Commissioned for a third series and second Christmas special...

Quote:
At tonight's BAFTA screening of "The Parting of the Ways," the final episode of this first series of "Doctor Who," producer Russell T Davies and BBC executive Jane Tranter announced that a third series of the show has now been commissioned, including a second Christmas special. They also noted that Billie Piper (Rose) would be in all the episodes of the second series, although whether she would return for the third was apparently still being discussed, and that John Barrowman (Captain Jack) will be returning to the series next year but will not appear in the first block of episodes. There are rumours that there were reshoots for the end of this series. Whether they're true or not, I don't know.

"The Five Doctors" was the 20th anniversary story in 1983 (along the same lines as "The Three Doctors" in 1973) and Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee both appeared in it alongside Peter Davison. The role of the first Doctor was taken by (the now late) Richard Hurndall, and it was Tom Baker's appearances - punting on the River Cam with Lalla Ward by the look of it - which were taken from previously untransmitted footage. There was also some archive footage of William Hartnell included, and he is credited alongside the others.

SPOILER WARNING - AVERT EYES IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS THIS WEEKEND.

Ecclestone definately snuffs it this weekend - it's on BBC News Online, and in today's Guardian.

His first words: "Hello. New teeth. Now, where were we."

Yup the Tom Baker footage was taken from an episode called "Shada" written by the late great Douglas Adams. It was never finished because of a BBC strike at the time. They did actually make it as a webcast though with Paul McGann and it's a really good story.

They also released a VHS of the existing bits of the story with Tom Baker narrating the scenes that weren't made. Unfortunately I seem to recall that the main climax of the story was one of the bits not made and therefore the whole thing came to a bit of a lacklustre ending!

As I only saw it once some 20 years or so ago my memory was just a little sketchy! But can one of you confirm that it is therefore possible to have 2 or more Doctors in the same room at the same time - and explain to me how they make that possible in the story? Confused

Surprised no-one's mentioned today's article in The Sun...

Highlight to read:

The booming voice in the trailers is that of the 'Emporeur Dalek' - a squid like creature in a massive Dalek pepperpot style case.

It also reveals that the Doctor WILL die...
