From what I hear (not gospel so don't quote me) the DG and Controller were arguing up to the last minute where to put the Callaghan breaking news, before or after Dr. Who. The controller obviously got her way (lucky she wasn't bitten or strangled into submission). Pres kept their options open and did not delete the news event into Dr. Who just in case they changed their mind. This last minute change apparently caused the automation to fail. The audio over the programme was caused by a stuck lag, an automation issue.
It probably ended up being after Doctor Who so that Scotland wasn't late getting to the football... unless the news flash went out on Scotland too.
Christopher Eccleston has quit as Doctor Who after just one series.
The news comes after the BBC announced it had already given the go-ahead to a second series following the success of Saturday's first episode, which was seen by more than 10 million viewers.
Eccleston, who admitted he found the show's filming schedule "gruelling," decided to leave over concerns of becoming typecast. "The audience’s response for the new Doctor Who has been incredible and I am really proud to be part of it," he said in a statement. "I hope viewers continue to enjoy the series."
Unusually, the BBC has confirmed it is "in talks" with Casanova star David Tennant as a possible replacement.
Eccleston's final appearance will be in a special episode this Christmas.
Well, this is unexpected, and quite sad, I thought he played the Doctor very well.
Am I the only one who finds this spectacularly funny? I giggled like a schoolgirl when first I read this! Eccleston just put the "terminate" in "Exterminate! Exterminate!" (Sincere apologies for the poor pun!)

OW, the PUNishment, why won't it stop! It's like a bad epiosode of pokemon!
Anyway, they were going to get to the whole "Regeneration of the doc" thing sooner or later....
I suspect that this story of Eccleston quitting is quite true.
In an interview I saw with him he was quite clear that he wouldn't be drawn into talking about future series of the show. To me, this said he was either unsure that the show would be re-commissioned (which of course it has been), or that he would only do the one series.
I suppose there are worse things that could happen.
Could a Doctor regenerate back to a previous form?
So . . . who do we think should "regenerate" into the tenth Doctor Who. Apparently the BBC may already have
someone lined up to take over the role. According to reports, I don't recall the actor's name, but this will be
the Scottish actor that played the persistent police detective in the musical comedy drama "Blackpool",
and is currently playing the lead role in BBC THREE's "Casanova" . . .
Anyway . . . "Who" does the TVF community think should play the tenth Dr Who?

I think this would be an excellent move for David Tennament. He was fantastic in Casonova. I think the role would suit him perfectly particlarlly the "Oh Yes" shots.
Any news on Piper?
In an interview just last week Eccleston said he took on the role of the Doctor because he was afraid of being typecast. The man seems to live life in permanent fear.
From watching the first episode I really like him in the role, and was looking forward to the rest of the series. However, announcing his departure after just one episode has been transmitted has cast a shadow over the rest of the series for me.
If the lead actor, who one week is claiming to be enthusiastic and telling us how he specifically asked for the role, can't be bothered to commit to more than just one series... why should the viewers?
I know I am being a bit over dramatic here, but I think a lot of long-term fans of the show ,who have welcomed Christopher Eccleston to the role, are going to be feeling betrayed by his decision. I really think he should have stuck with the show for a least two series to help re-establish it.
The producers struck lucky (in acting terms) first time round, if they are not so lucky and careful when recasting the role, we may not see a third series.
**Personal Opinion** - I think Bill Nighy or Richard E Grant would bring too much personal baggage to the role. As regards David Tennant - he's a bit too weedy for my liking.
